Wiping out the barriers of caste, creed groups and language, several countries have established the spirit of national integration and mutual goodwill among its citizenry to develop the socio-economic political scenario on the world platform. This article is branding the hullaballoo over migration of people from one state to the other a dangerous omen which doesn’t bode well for the future of our nation.

This brouhaha is all about the vote bank politics. The regional parties like Shiv Sena or the NCP are angry with the migrants from other states residing in Maharashtra in Mumbai and Thane simply because the increasing population is threatening their very political bases.

At the time of creation of Maharashtra, the Marathi speaking population in Mumbai was 41.64 %. By crossing the decade of 1980, the then CM of Maharshtra, Vasant Dada Patil had to comment that Mumbai is in Maharashtra but Maharashtra is nowhere to be seen in Mumbai. Such types of statements from the leaders are indicative of the anxieties of the local politicians on the count of increasing population from much earlier times.

State -wise break of migrant populace in all Indian states

Maharashtra

Among the total Hindi speaking populace, the Bihari population consists around 3.50 %, MP around 1.14, Rajasthan around 3.87% and Delhi around ½ %. If including South Indian peoples, the rest of the population residing in Mumbai is totalled up, the population of Marathi people comes down to 37.40 compared to the total.

It was the result of the increased strength of the population of the Hindi speaking people that in 2009 Maharashtra state Assembly election, around 25 % of the Mumbai metropolitan seats i.e., 9 seats were won by the Hindi speaking people. This was the result of the Hindi speaking power that the political parties of the likes of Congress, BJP, and the NCP had installed Hindi speaking people on the post of their party presidents. Upon the total of 6 Lok Sabha seats, 3 have been captured by Hindi speaking peoples. Shiv Sena and MNS are dependent on Marathi vote bank and Sharad Pawar’s NCP too is dependent on this. Hence these parties spit venom against the Hindi speaking populace to win over the hearts of the Marathi voters whenever they get the chance for it.
