Salient features of the UGC scholarship
The University Grants Commission has been instrumental in providing aid to students in the way of scholarships. Here are the noteworthy features of the single girl child scholarship scheme –
The UGC offers one thousand scholarships each academic session for the single girl child
The scholarship covers the expenses of tuition fees and a sum of Rs. 2,000 is given to the select candidates every month to meet sundry expenses
Student granted the scholarship will need to maintain academic excellence by securing minimum 60% in the 1st year of their PG program
Rules for the physically handicapped candidates are a bit relaxed as they are required to score a minimum of 55% in the 1st year to be eligible for continuation of scholarship in their final term
The scholarship amount paid to the college or University will have to be repaid to UGC by the institute if the student chooses to drop out from the course for some reason
Purpose of the scholarship
Data show that the ratio of girls in comparison to boys in a number of sates is much lower because of female infanticide. The male obsessed Indian society expects women to bear only sons. Women have no or very little standing in society. This is the government's initiative to educate women and empower them so they can be decision makers of their own lives. This educational scholarship could perhaps change the rigid mindset of people who feel educating girl children a burden.
