If students keep focus on logical skill along with clearing the concepts of fundamentals, better result could be gotten. Almost a month is left now to the CAT exam. In this left over time, what should be the strategy to be adopted is exactly what forms the subject matter of this discussion.

Presented below are some tips to score higher in quantitative ability. For admission into IIM, the role of 20 questions of quantitative test could prove to be crucial. In the first section of CAT, there would be 30 questions of data interpretation and quantitative ability out of which, 20 questions shall be from the section of quantitative ability while 10 from the data interpretation. Being familiar with the mathematical questions is a must for solving the questions of quantitative questions. Practice on the math questions of mathematics as much as is possible. Try solving the questions of number system, algebra, speed and distance, average, percentages, geometry and function from various different angles. It could be easier to win cut off from this section in the CAT test.

Preparing for quantitative ability for CAT exam

You can reach to success point by having better grips over time-speed-distance, arithmetic, algebra, and geometry, work and time and number system. It'd be an exaggeration to forecast in advance as to how many questions from which chapter there would be asked from the section of quantitative ability. You will have to do the practice on computer apart from doing a serious study on profit and loss, partnership, ratio and proportion, average, percentage, simple interest and compound interest, number system, probability, permutation and combination, mensuration, set theory, vein diagram, venn diagram, instalment payment, partnership etc. This would pave your ways to success in CAT.

What to do

Questions are asked in CAT after twisting and twirling it from various angles. Hence every question appears newer. A systematic study under this scenario would prove to be a boon. If the previous question papers of CAT are observed for the number system, it would transpire around from 20-30 % questions are asked (most of the questions) from this section alone. The questions of number system could be solved after applying a little bit of extra mind. But the question of time-speed, distance, work and time are always embroiling. It’d be better to solve these through imagination by sketching diagram. If you will shy away from doing calculation, it’d be difficult for you to solve arithmetical problems. Give off attention on the basics in algebra. Questions are asked from AP (Arithmetical progression), GP (Geometrical progression) and HP 9Harmonical Progression). Develop the capacity of thinking I terms of numbers to solve the problems from this section. The more you will do the practice on giving off the computer based CAT examination the more would be your chance of standing successful at the exam.

Best strategy for CAT

  • Importance of basic: You will get an idea after analysing the CAT question papers of previous years. You will know how the questions are asked and how much of attention is to be paid on what subjects. From the analysis of question papers, you shall come to realise the importance of the knowledge of the basics.
  • Application of concepts is essential : No any concept is easy or hard. This is actually the application of the concept of that question which makes it simpler or complex. Therefore application of concepts is important. If you shall study by dividing the quantitative subject, you are bound to click the exam.
  • Solve mock tests: Solve the mock tests in the rest of the left over times, in the exact environs of the real CAT like test. Pay attention more on those questions which you couldn’t have solved so far and try to find out the reason as to why you’ve not been able to solve them.

  • Two types of probable problems:You shall come across two types of problems after doing so. The first would be the problem of speed and problem of accuracy. If speed is your problem, do more and more practice and if there is the problem of accuracy, revisit your basic concepts and revise it again and again. You shall keep it memorised as to what formula should be applied on what type of question only when you shall note down on chart all the concepts and the related formulae. Solve 30-40 questions on the told concept which should be of the standard of CAT.

Improve calculation speed

You can remove any drawback you might have well before the commencement of the CAT examination if you practice over solving questions within the stipulated time frame. These days, several websites are there on the internet for online CAT test. You can do the preparation from your home if you have the internet facility installed at your home. There no questions in CAT easy or hard. This the concept of the application which makes a question soft or hard. This could be possible from exercise only. Keep your attention focused on practice and concept.

Wrap- simply believe in yourself

There is no need for students to be afraid in the quantus whether your stream has been math or not section because there is no assessment of your core mathematical skills I this section, rather it is based on your quantitative aptitude. Hence if th logic is used covering the 6th, 7th and 8th standards of maths-average, percentage, ratio, speed and distance, geometry and number system, you can score far above in this section
