PUDUKOTTAI: The World Bank-funded Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Resources Management Project will be implemented in the Agniyar and Ambuliyar sub-basins in Pudukottai and Thanjavur districts at a cost of Rs. 76.23 crore during this fiscal.
While Rs.51.48 crore will be spent on the Agniyar sub-basin, Rs.24.75 crore has been allotted for Ambuliyar, Vibhu Nair, project director, IAMWARM, Chennai, said Wednesday. Addressing a consultative meeting with officials of various departments here, he said the project would help to get higher returns to agricultural produce through the co-ordinated efforts of the Agriculture, Public Works and Water Resources Departments and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. While the Water Resources Department would reconstruct sluices and weirs and build checkdams, the Agri Business Department would tie up with industry for marketing.
Other components of the project were crop diversification strategy and drip and sprinkler irrigation techniques, he said.
Mr. Nair appealed to the officials to motivate farmers to grow bamboo through a tie-up with paper mills for marketing the produce. Bamboo, he said, was best suited to areas with less groundwater, and would provide attractive returns.
He advised the officials to execute a good part of the programme before the onset of the monsoon.
