NEW DELHI: Smothered by the heat throughout this past week, Delhiites were given a whiff of hope on Thursday as dark clouds obliterated the sun in the later hours of the evening, raising expectations of a premature summer shower.
Though the clouds refused to break into the welcome downpour, their mere presence was enough to bring down the temperature a few notches.
Though the maximum temperature recorded on Thursday was a scorching 42.6 degrees Celsius, things were relatively cooler towards the evening because of the sudden cloud cover. The minimum temperature recorded was 24.2 degrees.
Harassed no end by the incinerator-like spell of dry heat that the city is experiencing, people were finally handed out a legitimate excuse to go out and enjoy the momentary dip in evening temperature. The dryness in the air, though, was perceptibly discomforting with the maximum and minimum relative humidity being 53 and 19 per cent respectively. People rush outdoors
Several people who rushed outdoors to take in the relatively pleasant ambience were seen gazing expectantly at the darkened sky. Cottony black clouds were seen over West Delhi with stray incidents of minuscule pitter-patter being reported from that part of the Capital.
“I wish it would rain so that the heat stays in check for the next few days. Otherwise the precursor to the season has surely indicated that it is going to be one long, hot summer,” said Panshul Jugran of Rajouri Garden.
The Meteorological Department’s forecast for Friday is also tinged with optimism with a “partly cloudy sky and possibility of thundery developments in some areas”.
The maximum temperature on Friday is expected to hover around 42 degrees Celsius.
The BBC website, however, has forecast a dry Friday with rain in the offing on Sunday.
There was finally some relief for the city’s Power Department too on Thursday as no under-frequency was reported. With most factories and workshops closed on account of May Day, the demand for power was met without any heavy overdrawals.
An increase in the hydro-power generation also helped reduce the load on the Northern Grid.
While Delhi’s power generation stood at 1,299 MW, the maximum load on the system was, 3,372 MW at 3-26 p.m.
