WARANGAL: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) is one among the few premier technical institutions that was chosen for a noble and prestigious task. The Ministry of HRD has sanctioned around Rs. 1 crore towards training faculty members of private rural engineering colleges in the country.

Accordingly, the NIT would offer two-week training programme in all disciplines for teaching faculty working in private rural engineering colleges of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

In an interview to The Hindu, NIT, Warangal Director Y. V. Rao said there were 320 engineering colleges in the State, mostly private and about 30,000 teachers were employed.

A majority of them need orientation, skill improvement and advanced training to cater better to the students thronging technical institutions.

“The Government of India has come out with a great plan to train the teachers working in private engineering college in view of the declining quality of education. It has selected IITs, IIMs and NITs and NIT Warangal is one among them and only institution in Andhra Pradesh,” he explained.

The HRD Ministry proposes to cover at least 10,000 teachers this summer and the task before the NIT Warangal was to train a minimum 1,000.

The institute had already chalked out a plan to conduct 18 programmes in various disciplines each comprising 50 participants. It would train 800 to 1,000 in the next two months as part of the ‘Summer School’ concept of Government of India.
Set of three

Prof. Rao said they conceived three different programmes to suit the needs of teachers - induction programme for fresh teachers; refresher course and advanced technology programme which is skill development in thrust areas. To begin with, two programmes - one in electronics and the other in computers would start on May 19. It would be a two-week complete residential programme with accommodation and boarding arranged by the Ministry of HRD and the NIT would also supply the course material to the participants.

“It is an opportunity to the teachers to improve their skills and enhance their competency level. Better performance fetches great respect and remuneration,” Mr. Rao said.
