CHENNAI: Self financing colleges were not established purely with a service motive and they should be regulated, a few members who participated in the Assembly in the debate on the demands for grants for Higher Education said on Tuesday.
PMK president G.K.Mani quoted Supreme Court judgments and said that he had not found not-for-profit colleges in the private sector. The government should come forward to open more colleges in all categories, he said.
C.Mahendran (CPI-M) alleged that most self-financing colleges were “looting students.” He recalled that the government had identified 32 colleges for taking excess fee and had sent a report on this to the Central body. But no action had been taken so far. This was because adequate information was not furnished when the government forwarded the reports. He wanted the government to enact a new law to regulate self-financing colleges.
Earlier initiating the debate, M. Thambidurai (AIADMK) wondered what the splitting of Anna University had achieved, apart from lowering the standard of education. He said the concept of self financing colleges was introduced by Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, who thought the best way to bridge the huge demand-supply gap was by getting philanthropists to start educational institutions.
Saba Rajandran (DMK) and Mr.Mani requested the Minister to look into the issue of teachers in Pachayyapas College, who had been threatened with dismissal from service. Bader Sayeed (AIADMK) wanted the government to constitute a committee to look into issues that affected quality of education in general and higher education in particular.
V.P.Kalairajan (AIADMK) wanted the government to ensure that Tamil was available as medium of instruction for students of medical, paramedical and engineering courses. T.Velmurugan (PMK) quoted recent judgments to stress his point that polytechnics did not have adequate teachers. D. Sudarssanam (Congress) wanted the Central University in Coimbatore to be named after Rajiv Gandhi and the one proposed in Thanjavur after M. Karuanidhi.
