Karunanidhi announces ex gratia payment in tamil nadu

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday announced in the Assembly ex gratia payment to the next of kin of those who died recently in unnatural circumstances.
Making a suo motu statement, he said the announcements were in response to the members bringing to the notice of the government the unnatural deaths in their areas ever since the commencement of the session. These instances were referred to the respective district collectors for verification. The announcement was made after receiving the recommendation of the Collectors. The remaining instances of unnatural deaths were referred to the Collectors and once the reports were received from them, the announcements would be made, he said.
Vasanthamani and Keerthana died in Valaparai following a sudden gush of storm water in a waterfall. Vasanthamani’s husband and Keerthana’s father would be given Rs.50,000 each. Five Adivasis died when their coracle capsized in the Pilloor dam in October 2007. The next of kin of one of the dead, Neelan, was given Rs.1 lakh from the farm labourer’s community protection scheme. The next kin of the four others would be given Rs.50,000 each. Poongodi, who lost her son in the floods in Thirumanimuthar will be given Rs.50,000.
Two children of a family in Aroor were washed away when the Peraiyyar overflowed on May 5 last year. Their parents would be given Rs.1 lakh, Mr. Karunanidhi said. The family of a 16-year-old who drowned in Tamirabarani would be given Rs.50,000, he said.
In a rain-related incident in Stalin Nagar, Tiruttani, Mangammal died in January 2007 following a wall collapse. The next of kin would be given Rs.50,000.
The wife a person who committed suicide after he was hounded by forest personnel would be given Rs. 1 lakh. CPI (M) member, Latha, had stated that Taj Sheriff committed suicide, unable to withstand the repeated threats of forest personnel, the Chief Minister said. The family of a five-year-old in Madurai who died of cholera would be given Rs.50,000.
Mr.Karunanidhi said that the Kaveripattinam MLA Meganathan had submitted that Sennappan’s first child died while returning home after taking part in the Republic Day celebrations. Last year, his other son faced the same fate, returning from such a celebration. The Chief Minister announced Rs.50,000 to the family. Mr. Karunanidhi announced Rs.50,000 each for the next of kin of those who died in an accident in Kangeyam. For the 15 injured in the accident, he announced Rs.5,000 each.
A family in Gudiyatham, which lost two children in April 2008, would be given a total of Rs.1 lakh.
