DIRECT CONNECT ARCHITECTURE
X86 processors with Front Side Bus architecture share bandwidth between processors, memory, and I/O which can result in latency. Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processors with Direct Connect Architecture connect the CPU to memory, I/O, and other CPUs thus offer improved system efficiency. (See Figure below) The result? Outstanding performance and scalability. So you can meet tomorrow’s needs today with maximum efficiency
All AMD64 processors are built on Direct Connect Architecture. Direct Connect is an architecture that eliminates the bottlenecks inherent in 20-year old front-side bus architectures by directly connecting CPUs, memory and I/O for reduced latency and optimized memory performance. Direct Connect Architecture allows CPUs and memory to connect directly, thus reducing latency and optimizing performance.
1.Memory is directly connected to the CPU optimizing memory performance. 2.I/O is directly connected to the CPU for more balanced throughput and I/O. 3.CPUs are connected directly to CPUs allowing for more linear symmetrical multiprocessing.
In Intel front side bus architecture, processors share a memory controller and are not connected to each other. As the number of processing cores increase, so does competition for access to main memory. This presents a bottleneck at the front side bus, which greatly reduces performance and productivity. Direct Connect Architecture directly connects the CPU to the memory controller, I/O and CPUs eliminating bottlenecks and reducing latencies. Each CPU has its own memory controller, which allows more symmetrical multiprocessing and optimizes memory performance.
With Direct Connect Architecture, the possibility for increased performance is enormous.
