INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON ADVANCES IN ASBESTOS-FREE FRICTION COMPOSITES– II (IWAAFC- II)

ITMMEC, Indian Institute of Technology, DELHI – INDIA

7- 8 Feburary 2008

Workshop

A cocktail of fibers and numerous ingredients have replaced asbestos completely in friction materials. Interestingly, the necessity driven search for replacement has led to a new class of friction composites with far superior properties than the asbestos based ones. The innovations in technology and stringent demands placed by the new era vehicles for better and better performance of friction composites in adverse operating conditions has driven the friction composite Industry to produce the desired amalgam of performance properties by juggling with newer ingredients in right combinations and proportions. During this hit & miss trials, the scientific aspects the functioning of such complex materials have not received significant attention in the Industry. Various issues such as compositional influence, role of in-situ contact dynamics, correlation of squeal & noise with the ingredients and other factors should be addressed properly. The structure-property correlation in this area has always been a challenge to the researchers and practitioners to the extent that this very important area is still considered as a “black magic”. A better understanding of the mechanisms and science will form a platform to tailor and develop the future materials in this area.

About the Workshop

In order to disseminate the latest information about the Research & Developments in this area, it is proposed to organize a workshop at Industrial Tribology Machine Dynamics and Maintenance Engineering Center (ITMMEC), I. I. T. Delhi on 7th and 8th Feb (Thursday & Friday) 2008. The sharing of research experiences and wisdom in this research area by the renowned researchers from all over the world will benefit the practitioners in Industry and researchers in academics.

Following speakers (alphabetical order) who are active in this research field will deliver the lectures in the workshop.
