AICTE SPONSORED SHORT TERM COURSE ON TECHNIQUES OF HYDROCARBON EXPLORATION November 19 - 24, 2007 Organized by Continuing Education Programme (CEP) Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
in the Department of Geology & Geophysics Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur Introduction
Modern life is entirely dependent on fuels for survival and growth. One of the predominant sources of fuels is fossil fuel; the latter, in turn, is of two varieties, viz., Coal and Hydrocarbon or Crude Oil. From Hydrocarbon or Crude Oil, several liquid as well as gaseous products (namely, petrol, kerosene, LPG etc.) are prepared. The Hydrocarbon occurs at many places deep inside the Earth, where it had remained trapped for millions of years. Fortunately, scientists and technologists have been able to identify locations of its occurrences and have developed techniques for its extractions/exploitations. One branch of Earth Science is involved in scientifically identifying potential zones of Hydrocarbon occurrences and pinpointing their exact locations underneath the surface of the Earth, while it is the responsibility of Petroleum Engineers / Technologists to device techniques for extracting that Hydrocarbon from those depths.
After almost eight decades of mixed results of successes and failures, the Earth Scientists have acquired fairly good knowledge in the field of Hydrocarbon exploration. However, development of more sophisticated / sensitive instruments as well as refined techniques are still undergoing. Hence, many regions not considered prospective enough earlier, are now declared to be potential areas from the results obtained with latest instruments and techniques.
The main objective of this Course is to update the knowledge of teachers of Colleges / Universities, who are involved in teaching of this subject to the young scientists and technologists, interested in joining Oil and Gas Industry. The Department of Geology & Geophysics at IIT, Kharagpur is in a position to impart the required training in this field, as it has been teaching the subject of Hydrocarbon Exploration to the Under-graduate and Post-graduate students of the Department right from the inception of the Department. Course Content Overview of Petroleum Exploration Origin, Migration and Entrapment of Hydrocarbon Classifications of petroliferous basins Geophysical Methods Seismic and Sequence Stratigraphy Well logging Basin Analysis Oil Well Drilling Oilfield Development and Production Reservoir Charaterisation and Secondary Recovery Resource and Reserve Estimations Coal Bed Methane Gas Hydrates Faculty Faculty from IIT Kharagpur and other Academic Institutions as well as Experts from Professional Organizations will deliver Lectures followed by interactive sessions on the subject. The Department of Geology & Geophysics was established since the inception of the Institute in 1951. From the very beginning, the Department has been involved in teaching and undertaking research in all disciplines of Geology, Geochemistry and Geophysics. The Department has been teaching the subject of Hydrocarbon Exploration (geological, geochemical and geophysical) to the Under-graduate as well as Post-graduate students of the Department right from the inception of the Department. The alumni of this Department have occupied responsible positions in Oil Industry in India and abroad.
IIT Kharagpur is located in a rural environment at a distance of about 5 km from Kharagpur Railway Station (SER). Kharagpur is conveniently connected with Howrah (Kolkata) by several local and express trains. It has direct rail links with most of the major cities in India.
