IMPLICIT CURSORS

Whenever user executes SQL statement Oracle engine automatically opens a cursor on the server to process each SQL statement and to store the results of these statements in memory area. This memory area is marked as cursor.

Management and feeding of data in that area is done by Oracle engine itself. They are opened and managed by Oracle engine internally. So there is no need to open and manage by the users, these operations are performed automatically. For this reason they are called as IMPLICIT CURSORS.

EXPLICIT CURSORS

EXPLICIT CURSORS are user-defined cursors for processing of multiple records returned by a query. The developer declares explicit cursors.

This type of cursor is manually declared by the developer in the declare section of PL/SQL block followed by a SELECT statement and manually opened, used and released in executable section of PL/SQL block.
