The International Masters Program in Practicing Management (IMPM) is a Masters Degree management development program, co-founded by Henry Mintzberg, world-renowned management thinker and author of Managers Not MBAs. The IMPM is unlike any management degree program anywhere and is designed for experienced managers who want to get a better job, but more importantly, want to do a better job.
Built around managerial mindsets, the IMPM focuses on the very essence of what it means to practice management. It is a work-connected program that takes its participants around the globe, not to make them more global, but to make them more worldly.
Read on to find out how this unique degree program can help strengthen your organization – and change how you practice management.
The IMPM approach Unlike the traditional case-study approach, the IMPM curriculum is designed around the actual experiences and needs of the participating managers and their organizations. Throughout the program, learning takes the form of a constant exchange of ideas and insights, as participants move back and forth between management concepts and their real-life experiences, reflecting upon them individually and together
Breaking down the conventional silos
Most management degree programs offer training in the traditional business silos of marketing, finance, strategy, HR, etc., but little in the actual practice of management. As described in the Harvard Business Review article “Five Minds of a Manager”, by J. Gosling and H. Mintzberg, the IMPM uses a unique approach structured around five managerial mindsets.
Earn a Masters degree while you work
Participants continue to work while they earn a Masters Degree through five two-week modules given over a 16-month period at leading business schools around the world.
Experienced managers are also teachers The IMPM breaks away from the traditional lecture format, where the professor is considered the expert in the room. Instead, sessions are designed to involve everyone, with a 50-50 rule that gives the managers half the time to spend in conversation with their colleagues, learning from each other’s insights and suggestions.
This ensures that the focus remains on real-life experiences. In fact, these discussions often become much more passionate than they would in normal case studies because participants want to help their colleagues resolve the issue at hand.
Authentically international The IMPM is not a domestic program with foreign activities, but one truly balanced across different parts of the world and centered in none – so that each location feels both local and foreign. The intention is to create worldly managers, not global ones.
Participants travel to a different campus for each module and spend time immersed in the culture of the host country. While there, they go on field studies to local companies, observe different managerial practices and learn from the divergent insights and perceptions of fellow participants –especially those from the host country.
Given the sharp contrast to Western lifestyle and culture, the India module, in particular, has been a life-changing experience for many managers from Europe and North America. By the same token, Asian and Indian participants are profoundly impacted by similar contrasts when they attend the modules held on campuses in the West.
Worldwide campus. The medium is the message.
The IMPM is as Asian as it is European or North American, offering participants an authentically cross-cultural experience.
No one academic institution drives the program. Instead, it is a balanced partnership among faculty and business schools in 6 countries. Although each module is separate and distinct, and reflects the culture and business practices of the host country, they are all linked by the faculty from beginning to end.
The need for worldly – not global – managers
The IMPM is international, but it is not meant to be “global”, which suggests conformist. To be worldly, as the Oxford Dictionary defines it, is to be “experienced in life, sophisticated, practical.” The IMPM focuses the world around the manager: from a political, social, legal standpoint – to explore different perspectives and gain a true appreciation of other perspectives. Why impose conformity when we can benefit from diversity?
Ventures Participants develop a “Venture,” an individual program-long project focused on bringing about change in their own work environment. This approach involves active learning, which encourages participants to probe a company issue that would otherwise not have been addressed or would have been dealt with differently if not for the IMPM. As a final step, participants are asked to take a look inward and reflect on their ability to affect change, as well as on their company’s ability to accept it.
Tutoring in its truest form Tutoring is a key component of this program and is fashioned after the British system of learning, where the faculty works closely with participants. This approach personalizes and sustains the learning process by encouraging participants to apply what they learn to their day-to-day activities.
Selected faculty members are involved in both IMPM design and delivery, each taking responsibility for a small tutorial group (typically about five participants from the same company, where possible). The tutorial groups meet during and between the modules, which gives them the opportunity to track and share personal development, as well as discuss all aspects of the program, including their Venture projects.
Managerial exchange – or shadowing In addition to the five two-week modules, participants spend a week on an exchange at the office of another participant in another country. They often do not speak the local language, so when they observe their co-participant at work, the focus turns on the process of management, rather than on its content.
Participants then prepare a paper, detailing and reflecting upon their observations.
This shadowing process is considered one of the most enriching experiences of the program, as the benefit is twofold. Participants not only receive constructive feedback after being closely observed in their own environment, but gain insight into how they themselves work by watching another manager in action.

Admission and Performance Requirements
Selection of Participants This is a demanding Masters Degree program with ambitious goals. Its success depends on the quality and motivation of the participants. Suggested criteria for selecting candidates are:
Managers over the age of 35, in senior functional or general management positions, for whom a future role in senior management is envisaged. Individuals who are enthusiastic about participating in a innovative endeavor and have a strong interest in living an eclectic international experience. Candidates who can make a serious commitment to the entire program, who are able to attend all the modules and conscientiously undertake the work between the modules. People with a working knowledge of English. See IMPM Participant Profile (PDF) Commitment The IMPM requires a high degree of commitment from participants, their sponsoring companies (in particular, the person they report to and those who report to them), and their families. Participants are away from work and home for eleven weeks over a sixteen-month period and must also complete various assignments between modules. While we make every effort to "use work" rather than "make work", the impact of the program on the participants' responsibilities back home should not be underestimated.
Diploma and Certificate Participants who have satisfactorily completed all the activities and assignments, including full attendance at the five modules, will receive a Diploma of Completion of the International Program in Practicing Management from INSEAD and will also receive a joint Certificate of Attendance in the International Masters Program in Practicing Management from the participating learning institutions.
Masters Degree Requirements Participants are invited to register for the Masters Degree. All activities and requirements will be identical for degree and non-degree participants, except that degree candidates will submit a major paper after the fifth module. Masters Degrees are offered from Lancaster University (Master of Arts in Practicing Management) and McGill University (Master of Management). Applicants may apply to either school. A complete list of requirements will be provided when applicants are accepted into the IMPM, and will include the following:
Masters Degree applicants must normally have an undergraduate degree from a recognized university; a post-graduate degree is, of course, welcomed. Applicants with an MBA will find the IMPM much different and are also invited to apply. Candidates with no degree but other relevant qualifications may also be eligible. Applicants will normally have obtained an equivalent minimum of 3.0 grade point average in the North American system, a Second Class Honors Upper Division in the UK system, or the equivalent elsewhere. Two official copies of all transcripts showing the award of a degree and the grades achieved in individual courses are required.
