National Workshop on Some Recent Research Directions in Graph Theory May 26-30, 2008
At Department of Mathematics Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, Paschim Medinipur West Bengal , India
Sponsored by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India
The subject Graph Theory is an important branch of mathematics, which finds application in almost all areas of Science, Engineering, Management, and Social Sciences. Graphs serve as mathematical models to analyze and solve problems in above areas. It is very convenient and natural to represent the relationships between objects using graph theoretic language.
Over the past four decades Graph Theory has been one of the most rapidly growing areas of Mathematics. But the subject is still young with numerous open problems to work on. Objectives:
The workshop aims to provide a strong motivation and solid foundation to pursue research and teaching in Graph Theory.
In the five days program, lectures will be delivered by eminent Professors who are active researchers in Graph Theory. In addition to the regular lecture sessions, there will be tutorials, problem sessions and group discussions. Areas to be covered: Dominations in Graphs Graph Labeling Graph Colorings Algebraic Graph Theory Strongly Regular Graphs Resource Persons:
The list of resource persons includes experts from the department of mathematics and sister departments of IIT, Kharagpur, other IITs , ISI, DST and some Universities. Target Participants:
The target participants of the workshop would be the members of the faculty of the Universities and Colleges, Researcher Scholars, Scientists, M Sc passed students who has keen interest to pursue research in Graph Theory and its applications.
Participants should have basic knowledge on Graph Theory and Discrete Mathematics. Subject to limitation, interested faculty members of this institute may be allowed to attend the Workshop as non-registered participants.
The Workshop is confined to 30 participants and will be selected on the basis of their research interest and experience. Registration Fees
Rs 300/- (Rupees three hundred only) per participant. The registration fee is to be paid in cash at the Registration Counter. Workshop kits, Course materials will be supplied to participants. TA and Accommodation:

The Department of Mathematics, established at the very inception, of the institute, is one of the major departments, engaged in teaching and research in various branches of pure and applied mathematics, statistics and computer science. Besides running its own programs of studies at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the department is offering variety of courses to sister departments of the Institute.
The Department of Mathematics has built up over the years a tradition of excellence in teaching and research in the broad area of mathematical science and their application. The alumni of this department are occupying high positions in various academic institutes and other R & D organizations.
Present Head of the Department : Prof A R Roy Location:
Kharagpur is situated about 120 km away from Kolkata. It is an important junction in the South Eastern Railways. A good number of local and express trains connect it to Howrah Station.
