In ancient Greece, garlic was worshiped and chewed by Greek Olympian athletes as they thought it will keep vampires at bay. Well, interestingly, even today garlic can be used to prevent a lot of life taking diseases. Garlic is good for zapping bacteria, keeping your heart healthy and warding off coughs and colds. It is also known to lower cholesterol, prevent dangerous blood clots, reduce blood pressure, prevent cancer, and protect against bacterial and fungal infections.
Garlic has what is known scientifically as Allium sativum that makes it a miracle food. Apart from this, garlic contains more than 100 biologically useful chemicals. Therefore, one wouldn’t be entirely wrong in saying ‘a garlic a day keeps a doctor away.’ The easiest way to consume garlic would be by adding it in your curries and other food preparations. Chewing on slightly roasted garlic pods is also known to help fight bad cholesterol. If you cannot stand the strong taste of whole pods, use it in paste form for flavoring or pickle it.

"A garlic a day keeps the doctor away"
May be because it leaves a bad smell around the person who had taken it. It will keep every one else also away- not just the doctor.
A better way of saying it will be "A garlic a day keeps even the doctor away".
This in no way is meant to dispute the medicinal properties of garlic.

The extract of garlic was found to have a significant protective action on the following problems, situations listed below.

Anti-cancer Actions
Circulatory Effects
Antimicrobial Actions
High Blood Pressure
Digestive System Disorders
Whooping Cough

There is indeed a a beneficial effects in taking garlic. The only thing discouraging is its taste. However, several garlic supplements can now be taken which has already eliminated the taste problem.
