Advantages and disadvantages of studying in Europe


Most of the Indian students prefer to go America, UK, Canada, Australia for higher studies. But it is good to realize education among European countries like Germany, France, Sweden, France, Austria, Finland, Italy, Norway also considered to be the best countries to study abroad due to cheaper and very high in quality. In this article I have discussed in detail about the advantages and disadvantages of studying in European countries.

Many Indian students get attracted to America, Australia, UK for their higher education thinking that the quality of education is high because they charge very high Tuition Fees. Students also have a mi-belief that studying abroad in European countries is mostly free and so it is not high in standard. But students have to know some real and hard facts regarding education in European countries and than only they come to know education in European countries is very high standard as well as it is very cheap. Some important points regarding education in European countries were discussed below for better understanding of the students who pursue to study abroad in European countries.

Why European countries provide free education to international students

Most of the European countries education for foreign students is free. Indian students mostly mistrust as countries European education is free and cheap its quality is not good. But we have to know one important thing regarding their policy towards education. European countries spend their GDP- 20% of the total income on education and research. So they give equal opportunities to their own country students as well as international students to promote education and research this is one of the major advantages of studying in European countries . More over population of most of the European countries is very low. But India as our population is very high we spend very less percentage from our GDP for the purpose of education and research. Thus, scholarships in European countries can be a quite helpful for international students.

Most of the Universities in European countries are with very high international standards and most of them rank around below 100. Many of the Nobel Prize winners every year are from these universities only. Some of the best Universities in India rank in between 200 to 300. So one can imagine the standards of these universities as they rank below 100. Some of these Universities have great historical importance and all of them get large amounts of grants from Government. So they give high fellowships to international students who opt their universities for studies and research.

Is there any problem with language if Indian students opt for study in European Universities

European universities provide education to foreign students through English medium and so there is no problem if they don't learn the country's local language. Learning speaking local language helps to converse and mingle with local people and also helps to do part time jobs. So learning local language is not at all essential.

Admission procedure in European universities

Students have mi-belief that getting admission in European universities is harder when compared to USA. But it is not true. In European countries universities reserve 50%-50% seats to their own country students and foreign students. They give free education to all students who got admission which are run by Government. As many foreign countries students apply for the seats, students have to apply in advance for a course well before the end of December month. Seat allotment procedure takes 3-4 months. Students believe that IELTS/GRE/TOFEL certificates are essential to study in European universities. But having these certificates by students is good but it is not absolutely necessary. But student have to take care that which medium is they are following for a particular course to impart education. So Indian students who want to do their higher studies abroad can opt for the European universities which provide free and high standard quality education.

Education system in European countries

In most of the European universities ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). According to this system the credits can be transferred from one university to another in the same country as well as other universities of other countries as well if the students transfer from one university to another. Usually students can a maximum of 30 credits in a semester and 60 in an year. Academic year for a course begins in the middle of August and ends at the middle of June. In European countries Degrees will be in the form of B.Sc./M.Sc. Period of Bachelors Degree is 3 years and Masters Degree is 2 years. Ph.D or Doctoral Degree course period 3 years.

VISA procedure is simpler for European countries

Getting student VISA for European countries is very simple. The procedure to get VISA for different European countries is different. If the students submit the proof documents according the country's Embassy requirement, Embassies readily give VISA very easily.


Is it possible to get permanent residency in European countries

Once the student completes Degree or PG or Ph.D. one can apply for permit for permanent residency. European countries at present made it easier for foreign students to get permit for permanent residency. One VISA from European country is enough to work any where in 27 European countries.
