Ten much-advertised food items we must avoid

Don't get lured by attractive advertisements! Don't buy harmful food products at higher price! Read the following article which discusses ten most popular food items which are actually harmful for humans.

Today is the age of advertisement. Advertisement can popularise any item. Advertisers can go to any length to popularise their products. Common people fall in the trap laid by the advertisers and use these products, which may not be beneficial and pocket-friendly. In this article we will discuss about ten food items which have been made popular through advertisement, but in actuality, these should be avoided.

Sugary sodas

While watching advertisements of macho men and beautiful women consuming soda, have we ever thought the reason for consuming empty calories? Sugary sodas contain lots of high fructose corn syrup with absolutely no nutritional value. Instead of consuming sodas, we must shift to fruit infused water to enjoy a different flavour.

Artificial sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners are much more sweet than regular sugar. Constantly using artificial sweeteners cause more cravings for sugar. These sweeteners may cause neurological disorders and even cancer. Natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup are much better, but even these products must be used moderately.

Light Yoghurt

Everyday we see the advertisements of light yoghurt in television. Health-conscious parents have made this a regular food-item for their children. However, this costly product contains added sugar, aspartame and many other processed ingredients. Normal yoghurt with honey is much, much better for the health of young children.

Multi-grain bread

Multi-grain bread is nothing but white bread with some grains put in it. White bread lacks nutrients. Moreover, it contains enriched flour. Multi-grain bread is only marginally better than white bread, but this does not justify the very high price of multi-grain bread.

Microwave popcorn

It is another much advertised product. The microwave popcorn, if consumed regularly, can cause certain cancers and infertility. It is much more safe and cheap to prepare popcorn in a different manner (without using microwave) and consuming the popcorn with a touch of butter.

Processed cheese products

The processed cheese product seen in slices wrapped in plastic or sprayable in cans, must be avoided at all cost. These products should not even be allowed to be labelled as cheese. If a person is fond of cheese products, he/she can create own cheese sauce. The products available in market are very harmful despite attracting advertisements.

Margarine

Only some years ago, margarine was considered as a much healthy substitute of butter. Even today in India, margarine is immensely glorified in the advertisements. However, in actuality, margarine is full of trans fat, which can coat the arteries and increasing the level of cholesterol. Moderate use of real butter is much safer than using margarine.

Hot dogs and other processed meats

The Hot dogs and other lower quality meat cuts contain nitrites of very high level, chemical flavours, dyes and sodium much beyond permissible limit. But these processed meat products are becoming more and more popular everyday. Instead of using processed meat, sandwich meat must be prepared in home. This is really very easy. After cooking chicken or pork, the boneless parts must be sliced thinly and this can be used as sandwich meat.

Fast food French fries

This very popular food item contains very high level of sodium, nitrites, chemical flavours and harmful preservatives beyond acceptable limits. People must shun eating packaged French fries and instead eat home-made normal French fries.

Fast food salads

Contrary to the popular notion, fast-food salads contain more calories and fat than burger and fries with extra toppings or dressings. To prepare one's own salad is a much more preferable action both from health and financial points of view.

From the above discussion, it can be easily understood that by the lure of advertisements, we are taking harmful food products. Not only that, we are even insisting our children to consume these products, that too after paying more money from our pockets. The Government must initiate sustained campaign against such harmful products to raise the level of consciousness. In addition, laws governing advertisements must be strengthened to punish dishonest advertisers.

In the context of India, most of advertising revolves around aerated beverages, biscuits, chocolates, potato chips or such other deep fried munchies. Generally in Indian media like television or print media we don't find much promotion of items like fast food salads, hot dogs and other processed meats, margarine, processed cheese products and light yoghurt etc. Also we have respite from perhaps the most advertised item noodles these days. However irrespective of the food item, the general caution an individual has to observe is to not to fall in the trap of promotional campaigns. A simple way is to avoid all such eatables which are being promoted through media aggressively.

Even if we know that items similar to the above mentioned ones are harmful to our health, we can't avoid some of them. For example, we know that cool drinks are not good for health but still we keep them in our refrigerators to serve our guests. If nobody comes to our home, we take them occasionally.
Most people in the Western countries will have similar items in their daily food intake. But diseases like diabetes is affecting more to Indians even though they are taking such items occasionally only. Is it because of different climatic conditions?

Super article and really a good information. I read in one book that using soda frequently causes reduction of immunity power in body and also leads to hair falling. Similarly eating sugar free sweets and artificial sweeteners need to be avoided.

The article contains full information regarding our allurements with respect to certain food items and for which there are continuous display in the channels and even appear on the leading newspapers. These advertisements are so catchy that we are misguided with the information offered by them. Light Yogurt, French fries, Margarine, Multi- grain breads and many other products are the top selling products because of abundant advertisements and there is a growing acceptance of these injurious products among the customers including children.
The only feasible way to bring them back in the mainstream is to provide the children with suitable inputs from parents and also periodical hygienic classes organised by schools which would reverse the trend of their consumption of too much advertised products.
The author has provided sufficient information to make the readers alert about the bad effects of too much advertised food items.
Even the mothers should play proactive roles in this regard by providing healthy staples like Suji halwa, boiled eggs and fruits like Grapes, Oranges, Papaya etc in order to provide healthy nutrients to their children.

Due care has been taken by the author who gave the list of 10 most sought after food items which are widely advertised on television and yet bad for our health. Please be noted that television has become the hot medium for food items to advertise as the reach is sure and during prime time every house hold is glued to the television. So taking this advantage the companies are giving wide advertisements to their products and getting their sales boosted. For example the Pepsi ad which lost market due to awareness of desi (local) drinks, has started new ad campaign involving students union and thus tried to connect with the youth. But what I personally feel is that advertised items were not selling either too and hence through ad campaigns they bring awareness and nothing more than that.
