Real Life Story and Biography of Neerja Bhanot

Neerja Bhanot is a well known personality who has lost her life in saving the lives of 360 passengers. The article provides the detail about the incident that took place on Pan Am flight 73. Story of Neerja Bhanot

On September 5, 1986, Pan Am Flight 73 had landed in Karachi at early morning. The flight was supposed to reach Frankfurt and then on to depart for New York. Everything was going good till the time the flight had reached Karachi. There were passengers of different nationalities on the flight.

Just after some time the plane landed Karachi, four terrorists who were heavily armed had gained the control of the plane. They initiated their supremacy which continuous gun shots in air to frighten the passengers.

Neerja Bhanot, was the senior flight attendant on board, who was about to turn 23 after 25 hours of her death. She was killed by the terrorists when she tried to save three children from the fire shots of terrorists.

pan-amThe fore most thing that Neerja did when the terrorist boarded the plane was that she informed the cockpit crew who then managed to escaped through an overhead hatch in the cockpit. This was the time when Neerja was left with the responsibility of all passengers on her shoulders. She was the senior most among the crew members left onboard. During this hijacking, one of the terrorist asked Neerja to collect all he passports from the passengers onboard. Apparently, she understood that the utmost aim of the terrorists was to kill the Americans. So she hid the passports and discarded many of them in rubbish chute. Later, the terrorist could only able to kill 2 Americans among 41.

The plane was halted for around 17 hours on runway. Thereafter, the terrorists started opened fire on the passengers. Neerja has the chance to leave the plane but she decided to be on the plane and help others to escape. She tried her best to safeguard the passengers but was shot at last by the terrorists while saving three children.

The bravery of the Neerja will always be remembered. Most of us find it difficult to respond to such high tension situation. However, Neerja managed to act with high degree of intelligence when on board. Her courage had saved the lives of 360 people. Among the 380 people onboard, 20 were killed by the terrorists and 360 escaped safely.

Rama and Harish Bhanot (Neerja's parents), after facing this shocking tragedy, decided to honor her child Neerja. The insurance money given by the government and the contribution from Pan Am had helped her parents to set up Neerja Bhanot Pan Am Trust., they set up the Neerja Bhanot Pan Am Trust. neerja_profileThe trust rewards Rs.1,50,000 to two women every year. One is given to the woman who fight against the injustice and help other women who are trapped in such situations. The other one is given to the air crew member who works beyond her call of duty.

Neerja Bhanot was awarded with Ashoka Chakra, which is India's highest peacetime military award. Also, Pakistan government had awarded her with Tamgha-e-Insaniyat for fight with bravery in critical situation. Later, she was awarded by many awards by US government.

2016 Bollywood film Neerja is based on the real life story of Neerja. The film is written by Saiwyn Quadras. The movie is directed by Ram Madhvani. Star cast of the movie are Sonam Kapoor, Shabana Azmi and Shekhar Ravjiani. Atul Kasbekar is the producer of the movie with the production house of Fox Star Studios. Sonam Kappor Neerja has been appreciated by many editors for her fantastic work in this movie.

Yes, this article reminds us about a great daughter of India who saved people from across the globe from a terrorist attack, while sacrificing her own life. Even in the most trying situation, she acted intelligently to save the passengers while not caring for her own life. Her greatest positive trait was her sense of duty over her life.
