Summer is approaching in India and it's time to think of protecting yourself from the heat this summer. It's time for the girls / ladies to try out natural home-made face packs for protecting the skin from sun burns and sun tan.

When the skin is directly exposed to Sun for a prolong period, a black colored pigment called melanin is created in the skin in order to protect the inner layers of the skin. This results in tanning of skin or dark patches on the skin. If yours is a sensitive skin, you are easily prone to sun tan.

How to make home-made face packs to protect skin from sun tan

Protect your skin this summer and retain the glow on your face / skin in a natural way. Try out these age-old, simple yet effective home-made face packs with the readily available stuff in your kitchen / at home.
  1. Pack made of sandalwood paste and rosewater

    • Face pack made of sandalwood paste and rosewater is quite effective for protecting the skin in summer.
    • Sandalwood powder and rosewater is readily available in most of the Indian homes as these are extensively used for performing poojas.
    • Sandalwood is a natural coolant with a divine fragrance. It gives an instant soothing effect on applying and reduces the body temperature.
    • Mix rosewater in sandalwood powder and make a paste. Apply this paste on your face and rinse after 10-15 minutes.
    • You can use this pack once or twice a week for an amazing result.
  2. Gram flour-yogurt pack

    • Gram flour (besan) and yogurt (curd) is readily available in your house.
    • Take some time for yourself to protect your skin from summer tan.
    • A combination of gram flour and yogurt makes an excellent cleanser and moisturizer that nourishes the skin. It gives instant glow on the facial skin and also softens it. If yogurt is readily not available, you can use milk with besan.
    • Make a paste of besan and curd or milk of moderate consistency, apply on the exposed skin. Rinse with running water after 10-20 minutes.
    • Depending on your time, you can do this daily or twice a week for good results.
  3. Lemon and aloe vera pack

    • Aloe vera plants are grown in every home. Lemon and aloe vera are readily available in every house hold.
    • You can either make an extract of aloe and lemon or you can directly apply aloe extract on your skin.
    • These two have wonderful medicinal value. Lemon is a natural bleaching agent.
    • Make a juicy paste of the extracts of lemon and aloe vera. Apply this at least twice a day on the exposed skin and rinse with tap water after 15-20 minutes.
  4. Cucumber face pack

    • Cucumber is a watery fruit available in summer and is mostly eaten raw to quench thirst. It is also made into raw salad and is relished as a side dish.
    • A face pack made of sugar and cucumber mash is an excellent one for summer.
    • Cucumber and sugar are readily available at home and face pack made of these is suitable to all skin types.
    • Mash the cucumber, add 1 tsp sugar and blend it well. Apply on your face and neck and rinse with tap water after 10-15 minutes.
    • You can even apply cucumber mash without adding sugar.
    • Use this every alternate day for good results.
  5. Lemon or milk and honey pack

    • Honey is full of medicinal values and is used extensively.
    • A pack made of honey and lemon juice or honey and milk works wonders.
    • Blend a spoon full of honey with freshly extracted lemon juice and apply it on the exposed skin. Optional: You can add one egg white to this blend.
    • Instead of lemon you can use milk and honey.
    • Rinse with tap water after 10-15 minutes. Use this at least once a day.

Few more home-made face packs for summer

  • Mix up watermelon extract an yogurt or milk powder.
  • Apply milk on the exposed skin with a cotton ball. Milk is an excellent cleanser.
  • A paste made of powdered whole green gram and yogurt. This is an age-old effective practice which gives excellent results.

• Sandalwood paste not just whitens the skin it also heals and smoothens it. Both white as well as red sandalwood powders are good for the skin.
• The lactic acid in yogurt helps in tightening skin pores and removing dead skin cells. It is excellent for skin with blemishes. It acts as a mild bleaching agent.
• Aloe Vera is a great moisturiser. It nourishes the skin, hydrates and restores it. It is gentle on the skin and effective in lightening acne scars, along with removing hyperpigmentation caused by sun exposure.
• Cucumber is an effectual skin whitener. It is also an astringent and acts as a good skin toner, and helps in tightening open pores. It is good for people with oily skin.

In addition to the packs mentioned by the author, the following can also be used to remove tan and lighten skin colour –
• A pack made with turmeric, sandalwood powder and rose water. Apply and leave to dry. Rinse with cold water. It removes blemishes and lightens skin tone.
• Coconut milk and cucumber juice in 1:1 ratio can be applied on the face every day, left to dry and washed off with plain water.
• Coconut water is another excellent skin lightener. It can be dabbed on the face and left to dry
• Grapes have excellent skin lightening properties. Squash a few grapes and apply on the face to lighten the skin tone. For best results leave on for 15-20 minutes before washing with normal water.
• Tomatoes have skin tightening properties, and regular application of tomato pulp can help shrink pores. It also provides a soothing effect to sunburnt skin
• Fruits are a powerhouse of vitamins and minerals and can be applied to the skin directly for beneficial effects. They help remove dark spots and hydrate the skin naturally.
