Summer approaching, one gets really lazy. And you see your pets lazier. But with the summer in its peak, there are other inconveniences that come with it. It could be much more inconvenient for our dogs than it is to us. The normal sleep of 16 hours a day sleep for our canines may go up in summers. They are more prone to heat strokes as they have only a few sweat glands as against us. The dogs pant and release heat through water evaporation on their respiratory tract, still it is not an effective way for heat loss.

Symptoms of heat stroke in dogs

  • The frantic breathing by the pet dog could be because of the heat stroke.
  • The dog may show a bright red younger. This could be because of less water intake.
  • The lips of the dog could also indicate if the dog is stuck by heat.
  • The dog may vomit or look nauseatic out may be staggering.
  • A low or no response in the past of the dog to the daily activities may also be due to heat stroke.

Any of these symptoms when noticed should not be taken as casual. The dog needs immediate medical attention. Neglecting at this stage may lead to further deterioration in the condition of the dog and may also lead to its death.

Dogs that are more susceptible to heat stroke

  • Old and over weight dogs.
  • Dogs with any kind of illness specially those with respiratory problems
  • Dogs with less protruding face structure i.e nose like that of bulldog, pug, persian car.

The dog, your loyal friend should bed taken care of during these hot and humid summers. There are few easier ways by which you could ensure that the canine feels good and fresh during these days.

  • The first and foremost thing to be taken care of is that the dogs should be hydrated. So ensure sufficient supply of fresh water for the dog.
  • Clean the bowl regularly, al least once a day.
  • Put some ice in the bowl to keep it cold a little longer.
  • Ensure proper shelter for the dog. Kennels are very hot during the day. Keep the pet indoors, preferably in an A.C room. A pedestal fan may also be used.
  • Never leave the dog alone in a parked car with closed windows.
  • Bathe the dog under the hose pipe in the garden.
  • Keep a plastic wading pool ready for the dog to cool himself. The pool should not be too deep. This could be kept in the garden in the shade or in there bathroom. The balcony of the apartment may also be used for keeping the wading pool.
  • Keep a wet towel on the floor near the dog so that it can roll itself on it when it feels like.
  • Take the dog out for walks early in the day or late in the evening when it is still cool.
  • The dog should not walk on the payment as far as possible. Make it walk on the grass surface which is cool.
  • Do not over exercise the dog.
  • Keep the fur part of the dog short. You can either trim it or clip it up.

Dogs have their ways of dealing with the heat. They pant, they roll over the grass. Still these could not be enough for them. A little support from our side would definitely help them in passing these days off entertainingly.

During the summer the pet dogs would have horrible time as there would be no one at the house to attend them and being tied to a post or locked in the kennel, the pet feels uneasy and starts shouting much to the irritation of neighbors. What I suggest is that a attendant must be there to look after the pet dog. Otherwise enough provision of food and drinking water must be made and the dog should not be tied as it must feel the freedom inside the compound wall roaming here and there. Whenever time permits, the household must provide food and water to the pet, otherwise they get irritated and behave strangely even with the master. By the way never go close to the pet when it is angry due to over heat in climate and might be feeling hungry and thirsty.
