In metros, beggars are concentrated at the traffic signals. When your cab / car stops at the signal, as a foreign tourist you will be alarmed to see beggars knocking at the car windows. Indians who have become immune to them do not pay attention to them. Basic guidelines to deal with the beggars in India

Unfortunately, begging has become a profession / business in India. You will be surprised to know that many of these beggars particularly in the metros / tourist places are not really beggars but they lead a luxurious life.
  • Do not feel sorry for these beggars and don't pay much attention to them. Just ignore them. Initially they keep bugging you, but when you don't listen to them / ignore them, they move out of the place.

  • If you give money to a beggar, the entire gang in the area run behind you / chase you and keep troubling you till you drop a few coins in their bowls. As a foreign tourist, you will be perturbed. So, just ignore their presence and do not drop coins in their bowls. The more you give, the more of them will come running to you. Don't worry, most beggars in India just beg and don't rob you. However, be extra alert as some of them could be robbers in disguise!

  • While traveling in cars, you will be surprised to see beggars at the traffic signals particularly in metros. The moment vehicles halt at a red signal, these beggars start their business. They move around knocking the window glasses of cars. Just ignore them and no need to feel pity for their condition as some of them are not really in such pathetic conditions as they appear to be.

  • As a foreign tourist, be extra careful when you are chased by the beggars. As mentioned some of them could be robbers in the disguise of beggars. Avoid carrying your valuables like laptops, iPhone, high-end cams etc. Do not believe that every beggar is a real beggar - some of them could be even robbers but not beggars.

  • Do not go to lonely tourist spots in India without company. Even you have to go for research purpose or some other work, take extra safety measures like having contact nos of emergency services like police, medical assistance etc. In case of any suspicious acts, you can immediately contact the policemen for assistance.

  • More importantly, do not believe / trust everyone in India. There are few who take advantage of your trust and may be involved in criminal / illegal activities. You can take the assistance from the people but do not blindly believe them. Be in your safe zone for a safe travel in India.
