How to study medicine in Nepal

Medical program and duration of course


Besides MBBS and BDS degree programs in the undergraduate level, almost all the popular courses are offered in the PG level including MD or MS degree in Forensic Medicine, Physiology, Pharmacology, Community Medicine, Microbiology, ENT, Anatomy and Pathology. BSc Nursing is another important undergraduate course offered in Nepal.
  • MBBS - 6 years including 1 year rotational internship
  • MD - 3 years
  • MS - 3 years
  • BDS - 5 years including 1 year rotational internship
  • BSc Nursing - 4 years
  • MSc (Medical) - 2 years


Eligibility criteria


Candidate must have to completed their 10+2 or any other equivalent Higher Secondary exam from a recognized institute with Physics, chemistry, Biology and English to study medicine in Nepal. Some institute also demand that candidate should score minimum 50% in the PCB combination. The minimum age limit is 17 years.

Documents required


Following are some important documents that students need to carry along for the admission process:
  • Age proof certificate - It may be high school leaving certificate or similar other document with the date of the candidate clearly mentioned and duly signed by the Head of Institute
  • Conduct certificate - Certificate along with photo copies- duly signed by the head of Institute
  • Nationality certificate - It may be photocopy of your Passport or Identity card or Citizenship card
  • Mark sheets, transfer certificate and migration certificate
  • A self-addressed envelope sized 10X22.5 cm for sending acknowledgment
  • Original documents are only required to verify at the time of admission
  • Interview call letters - Based on application form by the admission authority, interview letters will be dispatched. Student must carry this invitation letter along with them for admission


Course fee and living cost


Tuition fee for a MBBS degree in Nepal can be something between Rs 30 to 40 lakhs, which is half of the cost in India. The cost of food and accommodation, adds up to around Rs. 60,000 annually. Also, some colleges demand paying fees in one installment, but others where fees can be paid in easy installments.
