About NSC

But first a tiny introduction about NSC. It is part of National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) which has a total of 25 science centers across the country. These centers have the best infrastructure and manpower to ideate, design, develop, and set up quality science exhibits, workshops, seminars and educational programs through the year. NSC has more than 500 interactive science exhibits on permanent display pertaining to energy, light, heat, sound, kinematics, mechanics, transport, etc. In the park and galleries It would take an entire day to visit the science center really unleash the child's curiosity and provide an understanding of many scientific concepts through the exhibits. The center has an exhibition gallery, innovation hub, conference rooms, library, convention center . Schools across the city sends students on a day trip to NSC.

About the workshop

The workshops are organized in the summer vacations in several batches in the period:
May 9 to 16, May 16 to 21 and May 30 to June 5 , 2016. I may be late in writing this article but there is still time for attending in the last batch. The workshops are organized for school going kids of standards 5th to 10th.
The topics are as follows:
Arts and Crafts for standards 5th to 7th
Model Rocketery for standards 6th to 8th
Creative Science for standards 7th to 9th
Electronics for standards 8th to 10th
Aero Modeling for standards 8th to 10th
Astronomy for standards 8th to 10th
Computers and Multimedia for standards 8th to 10th

The timings for the workshop are 11 am to 2 pm and course material charges just Rs. 800. The workshops are taught using hands on activities, few lectures, and also includes scientific experimentation, live demonstrations and film shows. The batch size is limited to 20 (40 for only creative science) and admissions are on first cum first served basis. Such a small group of 20 school kids is easily manageable. More details about the workshop are available at the Education Section of NSC.

Few reasons for attending this workshop

I would recommend that every child attends atleast one workshop to gauge the interest in science. You never know attending any of these workshops may kindle an interest in science. This happened for my daughter when she took admission to the first workshop way back nearly 10 years ago when she was just in 6th standard. After the first workshop she was hooked to science. By the time she was in 10th standard, she has attended every workshop which was organized by NSC. Thanks to the instructors and organizers at NSC, she has completed Mechanical Engineering and studying Masters in Production Systems. But when I look back at how her interest was kindled in Science, it was definitely a start at NSC. An added advantage of attending such workshop is getting clarity on how things work, having and clarifying a WHY question for things in front of you. The workshops instilled creativity, changed the mindset in terms of thinking processes, so much so that she studies on her own in 10th and 12th standard without any coaching.

In conclusion:

Inshort I would say that NSCs are doing an excellent job of promoting awareness about science technology among the masses, its applications in everyday life, supplementing scientific education provided in schools and fostering a spirit of scientific enquiry and creativity among students.

Go ahead and enroll your kid now or next year for atleast one workshop. You will know for yuorself whether it is worth it. Watch what your kid says once the workshop is over!
