How to submit application for Japanese Government scholarships for research students

Introduction

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan offers scholarships to Indian students for pursuing studies in graduate courses either as degree students or as a non-degree student at Japanese universities as research students. The candidates must be below 35 years of age with a minimum 65% mark in their undergraduate or master degree. The application form and guidelines of the scholarship are made available on the website of the Embassy of Japan in India - http://www.in.emb-japan.go.jp/.

Eligibility

  1. Research and masters degree students-
    • Bachelors degree with 65% marks or more.
    • For April, 2017 batch, the candidates should have obtained their mark sheet and degree on or before 31.03.2017.
    • For October, 2017 batch, the candidates should have obtained their mark sheet and degree on or before 30.09.2017.

  2. Ph.D. degree students-
    • Masters degree with minimum 65% marks or more.
    • For April, 2017 batch, the candidates should have obtained practical research or teaching or work experience after obtaining the prescribed qualification on or before 31.03.2017.
    • For October, 2017 batch, the candidates should have obtained practical research or teaching or work experience after obtaining the prescribed qualification on or before 31.03.2017.
  3. Research students or masters degree in Japanese language-
    • The students should have completed bachelors or masters degree in Japanese language from a recognized university, or
    • The students should have completed bachelors degree in any subject from a recognized university and also have obtained N2 Certificate of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) conducted by the Japan Foundation.
  4. Ph.D. degree in Japanese language-
    • The students should have completed master degree in Japanese language from a recognized university.

Duration of scholarships

  • Two years from April.
  • or
  • One and a half year from October.
  • The above includes a half year of Japanese language training period.
  • The half year of Japanese language training period can be exempted if the student has a good knowledge of Japanese language or opts for the courses offered in English.

Important points

  1. The applicants must be Indian nationals.
  2. The applicants generally should have been born on or after 02.04.1982.
  3. Number of scholarships are to be announced.
  4. All scholarship application procedures are conducted through the Japanese embassy/consulates or institutions of higher education in Japan.
  5. No application fee is charged. The applicants should therefore note that organizations or individuals who charge application fee or deposits have no connection with the Japanese Government.
  6. Stipend amount is 143,000 Yen per month which is approximately Rs. 87,000 per month. The amount may vary depending on the annual budget of respective year.
  7. Tuition fees is exempted.
  8. Round trip airfare is provided.
  9. The selection procedure involves preliminary screening of applications, written examinations (language) and interviews. The written examinations will be English and Japanese language tests which are required to be taken by all applicants.
  10. The names of the candidates shortlisted for written test and interview will be notified on the website of Embassy of Japan in India around 15.06.2016.
  11. The written test and interview will be conducted tentatively from 27 to 30.06.2016 at New Delhi.
  12. The applicants must acquire college student visa before entering Japan.
  13. The scholarship recipients are required to enroll in National Health Insurance program on arrival in Japan.

How to apply

  1. The candidates are required to submit following three forms which can be downloaded from the links given on the page -http://www.in.emb-japan.go.jp/Education/Research_Student.html
    • Application form (1 original + 2 copies)
    • Field of study and research program plan (1 original + 2 copies)
    • Placement Preference Form (1 original )
  2. The candidates are also required to submit following self attested documents along with application forms-
    • Age proof i.e. certificate of Xth class.
    • Certified grade transcripts in respect of each semester/ year undergraduate level onward.
    • Certificate/degree of undergraduate level onward.
    • Abstracts of theses.
    • Medical certificate (1 original + 2 copies).
    • Recommendation from the present employer, if currently employed (1 original + 2 copies).
    • Recommendation from the president/dean or the adviser of the last university attended (1 original + 2 copies).
  3. Hard copies of applications should be sent to the following address by marking the envelope, 'Application for Research Student Scholarship 2017' duly specifying the field of study-
