In this article, the procedure for getting Student's Pass for Singapore is being discussed.

What type of visa?

When a student receives an acceptance letter (which has a validity of two weeks) from an academic institution of Singapore, he/she needs to apply for a Student's Pass to be eligible to stay in that country. However, if the student has a Dependent Pass or an Immigration Exemption Order, Student's Pass is not required. A student must submit application for Student's Pass to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore. The student can also apply online using the Student's Pass Online Application & Registration System. The Pass is generally valid for the entire duration of the course.

Processing time

A student should apply for the Student's Pass within one and two months before the commencement of the course. However, the sooner the student applies for the Pass, the better it is. Normally the processing takes ten working days.

The cost of processing

A processing fee of Singapore $ 30 (INR 1465 appx.) is charged for every application. An additional fee of Singapore $ 60 (INR 2930 appx.) is required as issuance fee once the Student's Pass is issued. The current exchange rate is 1 Singapore $ = INR 48.69.

Work opportunity during study

Foreign students studying at some specific institutes of Singapore are permitted to work while studying. These students are allowed to work 16 hours per week during terms. Work permit is not required to work during holidays. Foreign students should check their eligibility for work from the Ministry of Manpower, Government of Singapore.

Work permit on completion of study

On completion of their degree programmes, foreign students can submit applications for one-year Visit Passes (Long-Term), if they wish to seek employment in Singapore. This can be done electronically via e-VP. Prospective employers usually make this application on behalf of the candidates (selected to work for their respective organisations).
