The Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University offers a unique opportunity for international students to study degree programs in both China and Liverpool across various disciplines. Find out more about the programs offered at the university.

The Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in China and Liverpool University in London have been jointly offering since 2006 a unique blend of Eastern and Western education to international students. Indian students who want to develop cultural sensitivity and study in a dynamic multi-ethnic environment overseas can take up a number of degree programs at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels through this joint institution.

Xi'an Jiaotong University is located in Suzhou, and is considered the Silicon Valley of the People's Republic of China. It is home to seven thousand students on campus, and an additional two thousand students who are studying in Liverpool University for the last two years of their programs. If you want to study abroad and earn a globally recognized bachelor's degree, master's degree or PhD from the University of Liverpool and learn to communicate in Mandarin, this is a good option for you.

The university offers a number of programs in traditional subjects as well as Chinese language programs. Here is a look at the programs available and other important details.

Programs available

The academic year in the university runs from September to June. The spring and fall semesters see many students coming in for Chinese language study. Summer programs in Business are also offered. Most programs are taught in English.

Students can choose from a large number of traditional degree programs including:
  • Urban Planning
  • Architecture
  • Engineering

  • English
They can study a semester or a year in Suzhou and the rest in Liverpool. The advantage of such a global program as opposed to a bachelor's or master's in India, US or UK is the exposure to two radically different cultures and the opportunities to expand the student's perspectives that can prove very useful in their careers.

Other program details

The cost of the program is typically around RMB90,000 (around INR 9,20,393) for an 18-month program at the postgraduate level and RMB80,000 (around INR 8,18,127) for undergraduate programs per year. These cost estimates include tuition fees.

Students can join undergraduate program right after high school, and no work experience is required for academic programs. The application process is online, and documents needed include transcripts, a written application and letters of reference. When it is possible, the university will also set up in-person interviews. Applications are processed usually in 7 days.

Accommodation options available to students are flats and apartment accommodation. Entry scholarships of RMB 35,000 (INR 3,57,930) are also available to ease the financial burden on students. Other scholarships from 10 to 50 percent of tuition waivers are also available based on the scholarship program. These include the Jiangsu Province Jasmine Scholarship, merit-based International Undergraduate Merit Entry Scholarship, Progressions scholarships, scholarships for funded PhD projects etc. that Indian students and applicants may be eligible for.

Besides the advantages of a China-UK education in one program, another advantage of studying a program at the Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University is that after study, students can enjoy the benefits of a strong global alumni network as well as the job and internship network that is available to alumni. This is a young, independent university located on China's east coast, with a focus on interdisciplinary study and research and with state of the art facilities at the disposal of its vibrant student body.
