Study Fashion Abroad in Offbeat Locations

While many students go abroad to study fashion in New York, London, Paris, Milan and other European destinations, there are other offbeat locations where specialized fashion schools offer world class education and insight into the fashion industry.

When most people think of fashion design programs abroad, the big study abroad destinations that come to mind include Milan, Paris, London and New York. But there are some excellent fashion design schools in other parts of the world such as in Spain, Belgium, Israel and Japan, which can be options for Indian students who are looking for an eye-opening cultural and study abroad experience while they study design aesthetics, fashion journalism, textiles, jewellery design, innovation, business and other aspects of fashion. Here is a look at fashion schools in some less-visited countries for fashion education.

Instituto Europeo di Design (IED), Barcelona, Spain

IED Barcelona has a placement rate of 90 percent, and alumni work at top fashion labels like Balenciaga, Loewe, Zara, Chanel, Balmain and others. This is good reason to spend between 9,700 Euro and 13,500 Euro (for undergraduate programs) or 10,500 Euro to 21,000 Euro (for graduate programs) to study at the fashion school in Barcelona. Programs may be taught in English or Spanish.

Undergraduate programs include:
  • Fashion Design
  • Fashion Design/Styling
  • Fashion Marketing and Communication

Graduate programs include:
  • Fashion Management
  • Fashion Design
  • Costume Design
  • Fashion Marketing and Communications
  • Shoes and Accessories

Language training in Spanish is recommended.

Students will encounter chaotic schedules and plenty of homework, but the alumni is unanimous on the very realistic experience of the fashion world that students gain during their studies at the institute.

Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, Ramat Gan, Israel

Israel can be an exciting, off-beat destination for fashion students who are seeking affordable programs at the school that produced famous graduates like Nili Lotan and Alber Elbaz. The Shenkar College of Engineering and Design offers programs in:
  • Fashion
  • Textile
  • Jewellery Design

International students are accepted as second or third year students after a year of fashion school elsewhere. The medium of instruction is typically English, so you do not need to learn Hebrew. Tuition is a very affordable 12,500 ILS (around INR 2,16,908).

Hogeschool at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands

If you are ready to work hard and take on a very intensive course that sees many dropouts who cannot handle the coursework, you can consider the Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts has an intake of only 100 students each year. If you can make it to the ranks of Belgium's leading fashion school, you will find an environment that encourages avante-garde and experimental approaches to fashion. Tuition is again highly subsidized at 7,000 Euro a year. Dutch proficiency is necessary.

Bunka Fashion College, Tokyo, Japan

Asia's unofficial fashion capital Tokyo is home to the Bunka Fashion College where top programs in:
  • Fashion Design
  • Accessories
  • Fashion Marketing
  • Textiles and Fashion Creation
  • and Technology

  • The institute is known for its avante-garde designs, and houses 8000 students across two colleges. You will need to have a good understanding of the Japanese language. Cost of education is between 1,184,500 JPY and 1,403,500 JPY (between INR 7,32,032 and INR 8,67,376).
