One year intensive course in acting at National School of Drama, Bengaluru Center

Introduction

The National School of Drama was set up in the year 1959 as an autonomous organization under the aegis of the erstwhile Ministry of Education and Culture, Government of India. The institution is one of its own kind in India and is one of the foremost theater training institutions in the world. The Regional Resource Centers, Bengaluru was set up in the year 1994 with a view to decentralize its extension programs. The Bengaluru Center of the National School of Drama has invited applications for admission in its residential one year certificate program in acting beginning from July 15, 2016. The aim of the course is to train modern Indian actors using traditional skills from classical, tribal and folk performances. Though the candidates from any part of the India can submit applications, but preference will be given to the candidates from the states and union territories of all southern regions i.e. Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Seemandhra, Kerala, Puducherry and Lakshadweep etc.

The last date of submission of application duly completed in all respects is 20.06.2016.

Number of seats

The total number of students will be 20 (twenty) only selected from the states and union territories of all southern regions i.e. Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Seemandhra, Kerala, Puducherry and Lakshadweep etc.

Age

The minimum and maximum age limit is 21 years and 30 years respectively as on 01.06.2016. The course is open to both the male and female candidates. The upper age limit is relaxable as per the Government norms.

Eligibility

  • A graduation degree or its equivalent in any discipline from a recognized university. It is relaxable in case of extraordinary talented candidates from the tribal, folk and traditional performing art families.
  • Sufficient knowledge of theater with participation in at least four productions.

Medium of instructions

The medium of instruction will be English. However the language of performances will be multilingual (Kannada, Tamil, Telugu or Malayalam). The language of writing the examination will be English or any language from the southern region (Kannada, Tamil, Telugu or Malayalam).

How to apply

  1. The application forms can be downloaded from the website of the National School of Drama - http://nsd.gov.in/ from 14.04.2016 onward.
  2. The application form and prospectus are also available at the National School of Drama, Bengaluru Center, Kalagrama, Mallathahalli (near Dr. Ambedkar College), Behind Bengaluru University, Bengaluru - 560056 between 10 AM and 01 PM.
  3. Application fee in the form of a demand draft drawn in favor of 'NSD, Bengaluru Center' payable at Bengaluru is required to be submitted along with the application.
  4. Attested copies of certificates and testimonials should be attached to the application form.
  5. Completed applications can be submitted by hand or sent by post to the Camp Director, National School of Drama, Bengaluru Center, Kalagrama, Mallathahalli (near Dr. Ambedkar College), Behind Bengaluru University, Bengaluru - 560056 on or before the last date.

Selection procedure

After initial scrutiny of the applications, the shortlisted candidates will be called for final selection through a 2 to 4 days workshop at the National School of Drama, Bengaluru Center, Kalagrama, Mallathahalli (near Dr. Ambedkar College), Behind Bengaluru University, Bengaluru - 560056 for audition/performance and physical test on 26.06.2016 to 28.06.2016. The original certificates and testimonials will also be verified during the workshop. The shortlisted candidates will have to appear in the workshop at their own cost. An expert committee constituted by the National School of Drama will assess the aptitude and talent of the candidates and the committees decision will be final.

Important points

  • The course is residential in nature. It is mandatory for all selected students to stay in the hostel provided by the Bengaluru center of the NSD.
  • An scholarship of Rs. 4500 per month will be paid to all selected students. The nominal tuition fee, hostel fee etc. will be deducted from the scholarship amount.
  • All selected candidates will have to undergo a medical test for physical fitness. The final selection of the candidates will be subject to clearance in the medical test.

Syllabus

The one year intensive course in acting will be divided into two semesters each of five months duration. Each semester will have two sub-semesters.
