About the course

The health conditions of older people involve a lot of complexities which require a good understanding of how to deal with them effectively. This course is for you if you are keen on taking up a full-fledged career in the field of nursing, becoming a professional in the field of social care or any allied healthcare sector.

Course duration

The MSc Complex Care in Older People programme, beginning in September 2016, is a full-time programme of minimum 1 year to a maximum of 18 months to complete. You have the option to pursue the course on a part-time basis, in which case you can complete the course within 2 to 5 years.

The programme consists of 4 compulsory modules, one or two modules from a portfolio of additional modules, and a final compulsory dissertation, altogether 90 ECTs (refer to details of modules later in this article).



Course curriculum

The curriculum of the MSc Complex Care in Older People programme incorporates:
  • Theoretical perspectives, concepts, and ideological perspectives relevant to complex care in older people

  • Clinical aspects

  • Psychosocial aspects

  • Social factors which impact the health & well-being and the policy interventions for addressing issues related to these.

  • Ethical, moral & legal aspects

  • Organisational aspects


What you will learn

Learning modules for the MSc Complex Care in Older People programme include:
  1. Classroom lectures: There will be 2-day study blocks which you must attend. It will incorporate guest lectures, Webinars and small group work.

  2. Web-based case studies: You will be presented with a case study wherein you have to work on managing & effectively responding to the complexities involved. These could include nutritional requirements, how aging affects the body, the roles played by family members in caring for the older person, etc.

  3. Peer-mentoring: During the induction week, you will be linked up with another student on the course who is from a different country and/or care setting than your own. As part of this mentoring, you would be undertaking learning & assessment activities with your peer mentor for the web-based case studies as well as during the study blocks. The arrangement with the peer can be reviewed with your personal tutor at the end of each semester.


Note that in order to be awarded the Master of Science Complex Care in Older People you must complete the following modules
  1. HLTH6056 Social Policy for Health and Well Being (10 ECTs)

  2. Fundamentals of Complex Care in Older People(10 ECTs)

  3. Advanced Complex Care in Older People(10 ECTs)

  4. HLTH6159 Designing, Implementing & Communicating Research (10 ECTs)

  5. Additional module(s) (totalling 20 ECTs)

  6. HLTH6059 Dissertation (30 ECTs)

You are allowed to select a 4 week practicum from varied options. You are also provided a wonderful opportunity to be part of a research group comprising of international experts, thereby getting the chance to formulate & test pioneering theories and approaches.

Course Fee

The full time course fee is £15,920.

You will have to yourself meet the cost of essential textbooks, costs related to assignments, lab reports, dissertations, etc as are required to fulfil the academic requirements for the programme. Scholarships

You can apply for the Southampton International Merit Scholarship of up to £5,000.



Eligibility requirements

  1. You must have an honours degree in a relevant subject or relevant work experience and evidence of being able to study at Master's level.

  2. You must also be in contact, in a statutory or voluntary role, with older people with complex care needs.

  3. You must have an overall IELTS score of 6.5 along with a reading, writing, speaking and listening score of 6.

  4. You would be required to provide at least one satisfactory reference.
