Management Aptitude Test (MAT) September, 2016

Introduction

Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a standardized test administered by the All India Management Association (AIMA) since 1988. The participating management institutions/business schools (B-Schools) use MAT score to screen candidates for admission to MBA and allied programs. MAT is the largest test of its kind and is used by over 600 B-Schools in India. The Ministry of HRD, Government of India has approved MAT as a national level test in 2003. AIMA provides educational services also by offering various long term courses, short term courses and e-learning programs. It is usually conducted four times in a year in the months of February, May, September and December. AIMA has announced September, 2016 MAT in respect of which registration will commence in the first week of July, 2016 onward.

Important dates

  • Last date of online registration - 23.08.2016.
    In case of the candidates completing online registration by -
    • Uploading digital image of photograph.
    • Uploading digital image of signature.
    • Online payment of fee.
    • In such cases, the printout of the registration form is not required to be sent. However a print out of the registration form should be retained by the candidates for record and future reference.
  • Last date of online filling up/purchase of form - 20.08.2016 and last date of submission of duly completed printout of Registration Form at AIMA, New Delhi - 23.08.2016.
    In case of the candidates who -
    • Affix the photograph and manually sign the printout of Registration Form.
    • Make the payment through demand draft (DD) or online payment.
    • Purchase the Registration Form against cash payment from AIMA, New Delhi.
    • In such cases, the print out of the registration form is required to be sent. Also in case the payment of the fee is made through a demand draft, then demand draft is also required to be sent along with the print out of the registration form.
  • Test Date (Paper Based Test) - 04.09.2016.
  • Test Date (Computer Based Test) - 10.09.2016* onward.
  • *in case the number of candidates registered for computer based test are limited, the test will be completed on 10.09.2016 itself.

How to apply

  1. Visit the website - http://apps.aima.in/matsept16 for online registration with payment of fee Rs. 1200 through Credit Card/Debit Card (ATM Card).
  2. The candidates may obtain a crossed demand draft (DD) of Rs 1200 (one thousand two hundred only) in favor of 'All India Management Association' payable at Delhi from any Bank or pay through Net Banking and register at the website -http://apps.aima.in/matsept16 using the DD details .
  3. The candidates can obtain OMR Registration Form with MAT Bulletin/CD against cash payment of Rs 1200 from AIMA, New Delhi and submit manually filled form.
  4. All forms received at AIMA are validated/scanned within 5 days and form numbers are made available on the website - http://apps.aima.in/mat_reciept.aspx. All forms which are found in order are provisionally registered.
  5. The provisionally registered candidates can download their Admit Card from AIMA website - http://apps.aima.in/matadmitcard.aspx on or after 27.08.2016.

Important points

  • The minimum qualification for appearing in MAT is an undergraduate degree in any discipline (B.A., B.Sc., B.Com., B.Tech., etc) from any recognized University or its equivalent.
  • A final year student of any undergraduate course can also appear provisionally.
  • Different management institutions/universities have different minimum percentage of marks criteria, which may be checked directly from their websites .
  • The candidates can choose either of the options of 'Paper Based Test' or 'Computer Based Test'.
  • List of participating management institutes will be made available from first week of July onward.
  • The number of participating institutes keep on changing from test to test.
  • All participating management institutes are either AICTE/DEC approved or university affiliated colleges or university department.
  • The approval/recognition status of various programs and participating management institutes should be checked by the candidates directly from the concerned authorities/institutes/universities.
  • Five blocks for filling 4 digit MI codes (four digit codes of participating management institution codes) are provided in the Form. The candidates should fill there blocks only when they have already applied in such institutes or intend to apply in the same.
  • List of 'Test Center City' will be made available from first week of July onward.
  • Test venues for Paper Based Test and Computer Based Test are different.
  • The paper based test will be conducted only on 04.09.2016 (10.00 AM to 12.30 PM whereas the computer based test will take be conducted from 10.09.2016 in different time slots depending upon the number of candidates registered.
  • In case the number of candidates registered for computer based test are few at any particular center then such candidates may have to appear in the paper based test on 04.09.2016.
  • There is no age bar to appear in MAT. Job experience is also not necessary.

Nature of test

MAT is an objective type test with multiple choice answers. It is designed to measure the candidates general aptitudes. The details are as follows -
  1. Section 1 (Language Comprehension).
    • Number of questions - 40.
    • Time suggested - 30 minutes.
  2. Section 2 (Mathematical Skills).
    • Number of questions - 40.
    • Time suggested - 40 minutes.
  3. Section 3 (Data Analysis and Sufficiency).
    • Number of questions - 40.
    • Time suggested - 35 minutes.
  4. Section 4 (Intelligence and Critical Reasoning).
    • Number of questions - 40.
    • Time suggested - 30 minutes.
  5. Section 5 (Indian and Global Environment).
    • Number of questions - 40.
    • Time suggested - 15 minutes.
  6. Total.
    • Number of questions - 200.
    • Time suggested - 150 minutes.

An excellently informative article from the author! The author has informed the readers all necessary information in respect of Management Aptitude Test (MAT) to be held in September, 2016. The article is also very relevant at present because the last date of online registration is 23rd August, 2016. The test is conducted by AIMA. However, I would only like to state that if the author would indicate the names of the B-schools which admit students on the basis of this MAT, then the article would be far more useful.

Under 'Important points', against bullet no.5, it is already mentioned that the list of participating institute will be made available by the AIMA from July first week onward. Also it has been advised in the 'Conclusion' para that the candidates should visit the website of AIMA before proceeding ahead with registration process. As a matter of fact, the list of participating management institutions is not fixed and keep on changing from test to test.
