Introduction

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India has started the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) in the year 1999 with a view to encourage students to take up research in the areas of basic sciences as career. Under this scheme generous fellowship and contingency grant are sanctioned to the selected students to pursue studies up to the pre Ph.D. level or 5 years whichever is earlier. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangaluru has been entrusted by the the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India for implementing the KVPY Program.

Important dates

  • Online application portal opens - 18.07.2016.
  • Last date for submitting online application - 30.08.2016.
  • Date of examination - 06.11.2016.

Fellowship

  • During 1st to 3rd years of B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math. / Integrated M.Sc. /M.S. programs - Monthly Fellowship - Rs. 5000, Annual Contingency Grant - Rs. 20,000.
  • During 4th to 5th years of M. Sc. /Integrated M.Sc. /M.S./M.Math./M.Stat. - Monthly Fellowship - Rs. 7000, Annual Contingency Grant - Rs. 28,000.
  • Annual renewal of fellowships will be subject to the students maintaining a good academic performance of first class i.e. 60% marks or equivalent CGPA (50% or equivalent CGPA in case of SC/ST/PWD) in science subjects in aggregate in each academic year in the first attempt.
  • In case of the students who fail to secure 60% marks or equivalent grade in a year (50% or equivalent grade in case of SC/ST/PWD) the fellowship is forfeited.
  • However the fellowship will be resumed in case in the subsequent year, the student is able to score 60% marks or equivalent CGPA (50% or equivalent CGPA in case of SC/ST/PWD) on aggregate over all the previous years.
  • The students are eligible to receive the KVPY Fellowship up to pre-PhD level or 5 years, whichever is earlier.
  • In addition to the above, the renewal of the fellowship is subject to participation and satisfactory performance in the Summer Camp in the first year and Summer project every year thereafter.
  • The Fellowship and Contingency Grant is forfeited in case the students opt out of the basic science (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.) stream at any stage.

Eligibility

  1. Stream SA -
    • Students should be enrolled in the XI standard in science subjects during the academic year 2016-17.
    • They should have scored at least 80% (70% in case of SC/ST/PWD students) marks in aggregate in mathematics and science subjects i.e. physics/chemistry/biology in the X standard board examination.
  2. Stream SX -
    • Students should be enrolled in the XII standard during the academic year 2016-17.
    • Such students should be an aspirant of joining an undergraduate program in basic sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.) in the session 2017-18.
    • They should have scored at least 80% (70% in case of SC/ST/PWD students) marks in aggregate in mathematics and science subjects i.e. physics/chemistry/biology in the X standard board examination.
    • They should score at least 60% (50% in case of SC/ST/PWD students) marks in aggregate in mathematics and science subjects i.e. physics/chemistry/biology) in the XII standard board examination before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.
  3. Stream SB -
    • The students should be enrolled in the 1st year of an undergraduate program in sciences (B.Sc./B.S./ B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.) during the academic year 2016-17.
    • They should have score at least 60% (50% in case of SC/ST/PWD students) marks in aggregate in mathematics and science subjects i.e. physics/chemistry/biology in the XII standard board examination.
    • In the 1st year final examination of B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat./Int. M.Sc./M.S. they must secure 60% (50% in case of SC/ST/PWD students) marks before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.
  4. Students enrolled in an undergraduate course in basic sciences,i.e. B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Materials Science or Environmental Science are considered for the fellowship.

Selection procedure

  1. An aptitude test will be conducted both in Hindi and English at different centers across the country on Sunday, the 6th November 2016 for candidates found meeting the eligibility criteria after scrutiny of their application.
  2. The details of the venue of the aptitude test and their seat number will be published in the KVPY website during the second week of October 2016.
  3. The eligible students will be able to download their admit card for the aptitude test from the website from the second week of October 2016.
  4. Short listed students will be called for an interview based on their performance in the aptitude test which is the final stage of the selection procedure.

Important points

  • The KVPY fellowships are available only to the Indian nationals only for study in India
  • Students of distance education scheme or correspondence course of any university are not eligible to apply.
  • An Identity Card is issued to each KVPY Fellow which enables them to have access to national laboratories/ universities who have agreed to extend special privileges like library, laboratory facilities, etc. to KVPY Fellows.
  • Summer programs of one or two weeks duration are organized normally during the summer vacations for the KVPY Fellows at the Indian Institute for Science Education and Research (IISER) - Kolkata, Pune, Mohali, Bhopal, and Trivandrum with a view to expose them to scientific research methodology and inculcate in them an abiding interest in doing scientific research.
  • Old question papers and answer keys of the year 2009 to 2015 are also made available on the website of KVPY.

Application procedure

  1. Application for KVPY-2016 must be submitted online only through the KVPY website - http://www.kvpy.iisc.ernet.in/.
  2. There are following three steps involved in application process -
    • Step 1 - Registration.
    • Step 2 - Filling personal and academic details, selecting test center and uploading scanned images of photograph, specimen signature, caste/disability certificate and other required certificates.
    • Step 3 - Payment of application fees.
  3. The application fee for KVPY-2016 is Rs.1000 (Rs. 500 in case of SC/ST/PWD students).
  4. This can be paid by using a credit card/ATM-Debit card/Net Banking or by downloading a Challan from the application portal.
  5. Application fee once paid will not be refunded.
  6. A valid email and mobile number is mandatory for the registration of the online application as all important information regarding application and examination will be sent on registered email/mobile number.
  7. The first time user will have to first register by clicking on the link provided for registration.
  8. On successful registration, user ID and password will be received on registered email and mobile number. It may take up to 30 minutes in receiving user ID and password.
  9. After receipt of user ID and password, the candidates can re-login the system using the same and view their partially filled application form, edit filled in information (except some fields) and upload mandatory documents like scanned photograph, specimen signature and caste / disability certificate etc.
  10. After filling in all information, 'Preview Application' button can be used for verification of the entered details.
  11. After verification the 'Submit' button should be clicked to complete the application. Subsequently the candidates can re-loin to pay the fees online or through challan payment.
  12. In case of opting for challan payment, a print out of the same has to be taken and fee is to be deposited at a SBI bank branch.
  13. After making payment of fees online click on the 'Submit' button. Similarly after making the payment through challan at SBI bank branch, upload the challan and fill in the details and click on the 'Submit' button. In both the cases a massage will appear on top of the application form as 'Your Application is under Scrutiny'.
  14. The scrutiny of application may take at least two working after successful completion of the application.
  15. A message on top of your application to the effect 'Your application is successfully submitted' will appear on checking after two days. A print out of the completed application can be taken at this stage and kept for reference.
  16. A print out of the completed application will, have to be carried during interview in case called for the same.
