My visit to pay respects on the first death anniversary of APJ Abdul Kalam, 28th July 2016

There are many ways one can show respect towards the affectionate great leaders and hence I thought of dedicating the month of July for the great rocket scientist APJ Abdul Kalam. I traveled to all the places of his educational years and this article highlights the travel.

The month of July I have dedicated myself as a mark of respect towards this space hero, APJ Abdul Kalam and made a visit to all his educational institutions as per the mention of them in his autobiographical book Wings of Fire.

Elementary School in Rameshwaram

When I wondered about starting from where to start my journey, he himself has mentioned his first schooling through the lines: 'One day when I was in 5th Standard at the Rameshwaram Elelmentary School'.

From Madurai we travelled in a car, crossing Ramanathapuram, his place of memorial, Pei Karumbu where his last rites were done and where his memorial is being built.

After crossing this place, the important place is the entry into the island called Rameshwaram - via road, it is bridge on the Sea and via rail it is track on the sea.

Also there is another inspiration in Rameshwaram, which is Agni Theertham (a place to have a dip in sea) which is the name of his cherished dream of Rex which is opposite to Rameshwaram Shiva Temple.

High School in Ramanathapuram

On the return trip, we had gone to Thirupullani (nearer to Sethukarai) Jagannatha temple via the memorial place of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam where his last rites were performed and other proceedings on the anniversary has been done by government. It is on the way to Schwartz High school where he did his schooling from 6th Standard to 11th Standard.

These were expressed in his book in many places and these lines were recalled: 'By the time I finished my education in Schwartz I was a self confident boy determined to succeed'.

Intermediate and graduation degree College in Trichirappalli

From Ramanathapuram via Manamadurai we travelled to Trichirappalli to reach the place of his college education which is nearer to the famous icon of Trichirappalli Rock Fort..

These lines from his book says: 'In 1950, I arrived at St.Joseph's College Trichy to study for the intermediate education; I stayed on the St.Joseph campus for four years', which hrevealed he did his degree too.

After visited Rockfort, we have travelled to Chromepet in Chennai . The MIT college is very nearer to Railway Station Chromepet.

These were told by him in these lines as: 'applying for admission to Madras Institute of Technology(MIT) regarded as the crown jewel oftechnical education in South India at that time; I managed to be on the list of selected candidates'.

I could see everywhere in the state capital of Tamil Nadu the banners to pay respect for his first anniversary on July 28th 2016.

Conclusion

I would like to conclude that our youngsters should really pay respect for him only when they act for his vision which he expressed in these lines: 'When a principle learnt in the class room is borne out by practical experience, it creates a strange sense of excitement'.
