List of Government of India Scholarships for students with disabilities


Are you looking for Government scholarships to study abroad for students with disabilities? This article provides complete information about the various scholarships and fellowship schemes offered by the Government of India for students with disabilities. The scholarships are for Class X to higher levels of education as well as for those who wish to study abroad.

The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India offers various scholarship schemes to provide educational opportunities to students with disabilities.

The below-mentioned scholarships are offered to students with disabilities with more than 40% disability and are having a disability certificate to this effect issued by a competent official authority.

Pre-matric scholarship scheme

  1. Offered for: Class IX and Class X

  2. Number of scholarships each year: 46,000

  3. Annual income ceiling: Rs.2 lakh

  4. Scholarship includes:
    • Monthly maintenance allowance of Rs.350/- for day scholars

    • Monthly maintenance allowance of Rs.600/- for hostellers

    • Book grant and other allowances, such as for transport, reader allowance, etc

Post-matric scholarship scheme

  1. Offered for: Class XI to Master's Degree level or Diploma level

  2. Number of scholarships each year: 16,650

  3. Annual income ceiling: Rs.2.50 lakh

  4. Scholarship includes: The scholarship rate will differ as per the course, namely for PG course, non-degree diploma course, professional course leading to a degree or a diploma, etc.
    • Ranges from Rs.230/- to Rs.550/- per day for day scholars

    • Ranges from Rs.380/- to Rs.1,200/- for hostellers

    • Tuition fees, allowances, book grant, etc

Scholarship for top class education

  1. Offered for: Post Graduate Degree or Diploma in 197 institutions of excellence

  2. Number of scholarships each year: 160

  3. Annual income ceiling: Rs.6 lakh

  4. Scholarship includes:
    • Monthly maintenance allowance of Rs.1,500/- for day scholars

    • Monthly maintenance allowance of Rs. 3000/- for hostellers

    • Book grant of Rs.5,000/- per annum, Rs. 2,000/- disability allowance and tuition fee of up to Rs. 2 lakh per annum.

National Fellowship for persons with disabilities

  1. Offered for: M.Phil. / Ph.D.

  2. Number of scholarships each year: 200

  3. Annual income ceiling: no income ceiling

  4. Scholarship includes:
    • Monthly Rs.25,000/- for Junior Research Fellow (JRF) for the first 2 years

    • Monthly Rs.28,000/- for Senior Research Fellow (SRF) for the third year onwards up to the complete duration of the course

    • Contingency grant, escort allowance/reader allowance, HRA, etc.

National Overseas Scholarship

  1. Offered for: Pursuing Master's degree and Doctorate degree in a foreign university abroad.

  2. Who can apply: A student with disability who is in receipt of a merit scholarship for Post Graduate Studies, Research or Training abroad (excluding attending seminars, workshops, conferences), from a foreign government/ organization or under any other scheme, where the cost of passage is not provided. The student should have acquired minimum 55% marks or equivalent grade in relevant Degree and should be up to 35 years of age.

    The fields of study for which scholarship is available are:
    • Engineering and Management

    • Pure Sciences and Applied Sciences

    • Agricultural Science & Medicine

    • Commerce, Accounting & Finance

    • Humanities, Social Science & Fine Arts

  3. Number of scholarships each year: 20

  4. Annual family income ceiling: Rs. 6 lakh

  5. Scholarship includes:
    • UK £ 9,900 per annum for UK and US$15,400 for other countries

    • Tuition fees, contingency allowance, cost of air travel (this is to-and-fro air-fare from the home-station to the Institute abroad by economy class through Air India).

There is a scheme of the Government of India, known as 'Free Coaching for Students with Disabilities'. This scheme envisages providing free coaching to the economically disadvantaged students with disabilities so as to enable them to appear in competitive examination like examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and State Public Service Commissions for recruitment to the class A and B posts, examinations conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC), various Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs), officer grade examinations conducted by Banks, Insurance Companies and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and premier entrance examinations like JEE, NEET, CAT, CLAT etc. Full details of such scheme can be seen that website of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.
