How to apply for admissions to Gopichand National Badminton Academy, Hyderabad

Eager to take up badminton as a sports career and become an international player? This article gives information about Gopichand National Badminton Academy's fees and facilities at Hyderabad and explains the various possible ways to get admission to the academy.

At the outset I would like to state that I am not a representative of the Gopichand National Badminton Academy at Hyderabad or any sports official related to the academy. I am merely giving general information about the academy's facilities and how usually budding badminton players could possibly get an opportunity to train at the academy.

Arjuna and Padma Bhushan award winner Pullela Gopichand has been in the limelight for a number of years now, ever since his proteges have made emphatic strides on to the international courts of the sport of badminton. He is an official national coach, training players at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) National Badminton Academy at Hyderabad, Telangana. With the recent triumph of P.V.Sindhu's silver medal win at the 2016 Rio Olympics, there has been an even greater interest in youngsters in the sport and the wish to be trained by none other than Gopichand himself.

Well, let me tell you that the academy is already so full up with trainees, there is really no opening as such for more! In fact, there is already a very long waiting queue of thousands. Yet, don't give up on your dream of getting in. There are a couple of avenues you could explore, as mentioned in this article.

First, though, let's have a glimpse into the academy itself.

Gopichand National Badminton Academy infrastructure and facilities

There are 2 training facilities, a new one being opened October 2016 within walking distance from the old one. The main building has about 8 international courts, a gym housed with the health club on the premises, a jacuzzi with a steam room, a yoga centre and a meditation hall. There is also a football field and a swimming pool. In-house accommodation is available for boarders and coaches.

Other than badminton coaches, including ones from other Asian countries, there are also physiotherapists and physical fitness trainers to help the trainees build up stamina and improve their fitness levels. Weight-training and running are part of the vigorous training schedule. Special nutritional diet plans are ensured as well as mental conditioning.

The new building nearby has similar residential facilities and 9 badminton courts.

Academy fees

As per reports in the press, the monthly fee begins at Rs.2000/-. Those who stay on the academy campus itself likely pay up to Rs. 15,000/- per month.

Options to get admission

The primary way, of course, to get admission into the academy is to physically pay a visit to the academy office and take your chances of getting in.

The second way is to keep a keen eye on advertisements in the local newspapers and check online too for notifications issued by SAI about selection trials. The schedule of such trials is sometimes published in the media once or twice in a year, especially during the summer vacation in the month of May.

The third option is to apply for admission to the newly opened branch of the academy at Salem, Tamil Nadu. Those who are amongst the best performing players of the Salem Academy will likely have the opportunity to receive specialized training at the head quarters in Hyderabad.

Eligibility requirements

Not just anybody can necessarily get admission to the Hyderabad academy! Preference is always given to the National ranked players. At the annual SAI selection trials, usually there is a schedule for the various age groups, namely:
  • The top 20 national ranked players for the under-13 category.

  • The top 10 national ranked players for the under-15 category.

  • The top 5 national ranked players for the under-17 category.

  • The top 5 national ranked players for the under-19 category.

Thank you Vandana! This was really helpful to me. Since it seem that you've researched well, can I ask some more friendly advise on the same?
My son(8 years) plays extremely well as per his coach and others are concerned. I have a friend, who is into media, assuring me the admission using his media contact. But I'm confused, whether I should go by his way or try on my own?

Please guide me. I need your valuable advice.

Avinash,

As the author of the article, I have given general information. I am not exactly a professional sports coach to advise you on your son's budding career as a badminton player. Besides, all my life I myself have never used "contacts".

Nevertheless, my suggestion for what it is worth: If the media contact is genuine and works for you without the need for paying a fee as a 'commission' or doing other favours, that would be good. You should also keep in mind that eventually any contact would not necessarily get the actual admission into the badminton academy. Based on your son's talent the selection would be done if at all. If it is possible, try to get direct admission to the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy at Salem since there too your son can get coached and if showing promise get the possible opportunity perhaps to later train under Pullela Gopichand himself at Hyderabad.

Manoj,

You are requested to contact the academy directly for details about education facilities and fees. I do not think they have any provision for on-campus formal academics.
