Introduction Analyzing the present and future view of national security environment, the world order, it has become imperative for India to defend her citizens and boundaries against the long range missiles and nuclear tipped missiles and nuclear weapons held by our enemies. There missiles are great threats to the Indian security. So India should work out the solutions for these threats. There are many options i.e. good foreign relation, Disarmament, treaties, Air defense system development and deployment of Anti-missiles, Air defense system. For this air defense system there is two options 1.National Missile Defense (NMD) 2.Theater missile defense system. Theater Missile Defense (TMD) is practiced by Russia and America since 1972 when they entered into ABM treaty of 1972. Now they are moving towards National Missile Defense system. USA is busy in developing and deploying National Missile Defense since the year 2000.
Deployment India should go for Theater missile defense because in Theater missile defense few locations will be protected against missile attack. Going for National Missile Defense is very costly affair. If India grows economically very strong in the future then can go for National Missile Defense. Anti-missile Air defense system can be deployed on ground, sea, Air and at the fighter aircraft ground deployment will ensure the security of Metros, Atomic research centers, large Indus trial estates (locations) refineries, large railway stations, Airports, Airfields etc.
Sea deployment will ensure the security of aircraft carrier, ships, submarines, ports etc. against the missile attack. Fitting anti-missile defense system into the fighter will ensure the security against the missile attack from aircraft. Putting satellites into the space for early warning about the missile attack and guiding the trajectory and direction of missile which will help in countering the missiles. India is developing anti-missile defense system with the cooperation of USA and Israel which is a very appreciable job of the government. Following are the some Anti-Missile Air Defense systems.
Patriot advanced capability-3 (PAC-3) It forms the lower tier of US army's two stage Theater Missile Defense System. Intended to protect rear area critical assets and maneuver forces at the corps level. It is guided by a Ka-band active radar seeker during the final stage of interception and is intended to make hit to kill interceptions of theater ballistic missile (TBM) targets. Each launcher can carry 4-16 missiles. It can also be used against the aircraft and cruise missiles.
Antey- 2500 anti-ballistic missile defense system It is Russian ATBM system, Indian deal finally announced in summer 2001 for six units of improved Antey -2500 variant . The Antey- 2500 introduces a new sector scanning radar and improved 9 M 82 M and 9 M 83 M missiles these allow the ballistic missile targets to be destroyed at range unto 40 km and at altitudes ranging 1-30 km. The S-300 PMU can intercept 300 km range missile while S-300 PMU-1 can intercept up to 1000 km.
Theater high altitude Air Defense longer ranged system It is the upper tier of the US army's Anti Tactical Ballistic Missile defense. Theater Defense is intended to conduct exo-atmospheric and endow - atmospheric intercepts at long range. It will complement the shorter ranged PAC-3. So most of the engagements are expected to be at altitudes of from 50-100 Kms. The missile is a single stage weapon which flies at a speed of 2800 m/s and releases a kill vehicle which carries out a hit-to-kill intercept under the control of gimbals mounted infrared seeker.
Israel's Arrow Anti Tactical Ballistic MissileIsrael is having operational anti-missile capability. In combat individual target would be engaged by a single missile or by one or two round salvo. After releasing its booster stage the arrow missile homes into its target using a dual mode seeker. The radar sensor is used to generate range and range rate data while the electro-optical sensor helps discriminate against decoys. In the final movement of flight the radar sensor activates the fuse of a directed fragmentation warhead whose lethal effects will compensate for any miss distance.
It is possible that India can operate the arrow Anti Tactical Ballistic Missile system as an upper tier for Anti Tactical Ballistic Missile defense to supplement the Antey-2500 anti-ballistic missile defense system. In 2001 India has purchased two Elta Electronic Green pine 2-band radars.
Russian Almaz S-400The new Almaz S-400 is an air defense missile system. The S-400 was developed as surface-to-air missile systems. It is able to intercept theater ballistic missiles of up to 3500 Kms range and a range of 400 Kms against aircraft targets. Recently in September 2015, Russia deployed her Anti-Missile Defense systems in Syria while carrying out the military operation against Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). India has ordered five AS-400 Anti-Missile Defense systems. In may 2016 Indian Defense Minister Manohar Parikar said that the we have approved the purchase of the system.
