Gajarajan Thirunakkara Sivan celebrated his 50th birthday this month. I think you all might have an interest to know who is this Gajakesari Thirunakkara Sivan? He is a famous temple elephant of Kerala. He belongs to Thirunakkara temple located in Kottayam district, Kerala. This month is so special for Thirunakkara Sivan as he turned 50. The birthday celebration was held on October 16 at Thirunakkara Temple, Sivasakthi Auditorium in Kottayam district , Kerala.

Who is the owner of Gajakesari Thirunakkara Sivan?


Sivan, the elephant was bought by Devaswom Board from Kodanad Elephant Training Centre In the year 1999. At that time, he was only 24. After Kottayam Thirunakkara Temple located in temple road, Thirunakkara, Kottayam district,Kerala became the owner of Sivan, his name was changed into Thirunakkara Sivan. I would like to mention an important point about Thirunakkara Temple, before going into the details of Thirunakkara Sivan. Thirunakkara Sree Mahadevar temple is one of the famous Siva temples of Kerala. So I guess from this small point itself, you might have understood the importance of this temple elephant. With a height of 304.8 cm, this elephant attracts lots of devotees visiting the temple. He is one of the favorite elephant of all elephant lovers in Kerala. One of the beauty of this elephant is the large ears which produces a large flapping sound during fanning. The other features of this elephant includes straight long tail, good teeth, long trunk, clear eyes, strong legs, forehead bump and a twin dome on the head.

Gajakesari Thirunakkara Sivan awarded Gajaraja Pattam


The 50th birthday celebrations of Gajarajan Thirunakkara Sivan was inaugurated by Kerala minister Kadakampally Surendran and the function was attended by Prayar Gopalakrishnan(Travancore Devaswom Board President), Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan MLA, Ajay Tharayil, C.Latha(Kottayam Collector), M.P.Govindan Nair, T.Ramanbhattathiripad and Dr P.R.Sona(Municipal Chairperson). In this function, the prestigious award Gajaraja Pattam was awarded to Thirunakkara Sivan by Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan MLA. Most of the popular elephants in Kerala like Guruvayur Siddharthan has been awarded the title Gajaraja Pattam title earlier. The 50th birthday celebrations of Gajarajan Thirunakkara Sivan was concluded with a grand sadya prepared by Pazhayidam Mohanan Namboodiri.

During the festival times, Thirunakkara Sivan is given more importance and he has participated in the Thrissur Pooram 2008 and Thirunakkara Pakalpooram 2015. We have to wait and see more news from this Gajakesari Thirunakkara Sivan, an elephant with Gajaraja Pattam title, in the coming years.
