Abyssinian Restaurant, India's first Ethiopian restaurant has been opened in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This is the one and only one restaurant of India where you can get Ethiopian foods. The restaurant launched by Vikram Mohan ad Uday Balaji from VM Hospitality was inaugurated this week in Chennai by Ethiopian ambassador Asfaw Dingamo Kame. Even though Ethiopian foods are available in different restaurants in India like the pop ups in Mumbai and Blue Nile restaurant located at Ethiopian Cultural Center Delhi, this is the only restaurant in India which will serve Ethiopian foods only. This is a small restaurant which can accommodate only 20 persons. For those who love Ethiopian food, lunch and dinner are provided in this restaurant. Lets see the special features and location of Abyssinian restaurant in Chennai.

Special features and menu

The restaurant is well arranged with signs of Ethiopian culture. About 50 food items will be available in this Ethiopian restaurant. A special menu is the black coffee available with ghee and salt for drinking. This is mainly made by roasting and grinding the coffee seeds. If you need sugar, then you can add to this delicious coffee for drinking. Other food items include chicken dorowat, firfir, kitfo etc. This dorowat is a spicy chicken stew and is popular in Ethiopia as its national dish. When considering the dish firfir, it is used as breakfast for the people of Ethiopia. Usually the people in Ethiopia eat food using hands only , very rarely they will use spoons. So for most of the dishes mentioned here, they won't use spoons. Whenever you see the food item kitfo in an Ethiopian restaurant, remember that its an Ethiopian steak tartar.

The food item that is similar to Indian dosa and chappathi is also available here. Its known as Injera, Its actually a soft flat bread made from teff seeds. My parents were in Ethiopia for some years as part of their job and so they were able to see teff cultivation there. I think before going into other details of this restaurant, I should mention something about teff seeds here. Then only you can understand the importance of Injera, a traditional food of Ethiopia. This teff seeds are food rich in vitamins, minerals, protein, manganese, calcium and iron. We all know that those ingredients are essential for a healthy human body . Even when considering the size of teff seeds, don't think that its very large. Actually its a very small seed full of nutrients. You can see this in almost all parts of Ethiopia. All the essential 8 amino acids are present in this seed. Now I guess you all might have understood that Injera is a complete nutritional food. if you get a chance to visit Abyssinian restaurant, you can see that the restaurant is fully decorated with Ethiopian decorative items, handicrafts, wall paintings and musical instruments. Also you can enjoy the Ethiopian music while eating food. All this foods will be prepared under the guidance of an Ethiopian historian and chef. Even the founders of this Ethiopian restaurant have set up a farm in Tamil Nadu for cultivating teff.
