PROTECTION MANIA
Self defense is survival on land like swimming is survival in water. Success in Self Defense is not winning a fight but avoiding it. The ultimate success in self defense is when nothing happens.

Self Defense Philosophy:- If you can’t prevent; avoid it. If you can’t avoid; defuse it. If you can’t defuse; escape. If you can’t escape; you may have to fight your way out of the situation.

Self Defense is not mastering but building up your reflexes.

Basic Safety:-

a. Always have a mentally rehearsed plan of action, such as what you would do, or where you would go in the event you were victimized in some way.
b. Always be alert and aware of your surroundings.
c. Walk confidently, keeping aware of the people in front of you, behind you and to your sides.
d. Always trust your instincts, if you feel something is wrong, act on your feelings.
e. Always be physically and mentally prepared to run or escape an attacker, or as a last resort, to fight back.
f. If possible, do not restrict the ability to use both hands by carrying a purse, bags or many packages.
g. Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

Home Safety:-
• Answer your door with it closed and locked. Learn to speak through the closed door. It’s not impolite; it is safer.
• Install good locks and use them.
• Avoid using chain locks. They present little deterrent to an aggressive person.
• Your door should be equipped with a door viewer.
• Don’t hide keys outside. Leave with a trusted Neighbour.
• Secure all windows.
• Draw window shades or drapes after dark and don’t leave accessible windows open while you sleep.
• Never open the door to strangers.
• Verify identification of visitors, sales and service people. Check with the company to see if they sent a representative.
• Should a stranger request to use your phone, do not allow the person to enter your home.
• Offer to make the call for them. Even if it’s a woman don’t unlock your door
• Don’t reveal personal information to anyone on the phone or at your door.

• Change the locks when moving to a new home or when a tenant moves out.
• If you live alone, have a male friend or relative record your voice message on your answering machine.
• Trim down bushes and trees blocking any doors and windows of the house. Also, keep the exterior of your home well lit.
• Equip all doors and windows with good locking devices.
• Install peepholes in doors without windows that enter and exit your home.
• Never announce that you are home alone. Do not allow anyone that you are unfamiliar with into your home.
• IF you order a food delivery, have the exact amount for the purchase ready and complete the transaction on the porch on in the hallway.

Outside or Walking:-

On the street
• Plan your route and avoid short cuts through parks, vacant lots or unlit areas.
• Know where police stations or after hour stores are located
• Avoid being alone if you can. Get a friend to accompany you. If they can’t, let them know the route you’re taking. Call when you arrive.
• Don’t carry large sums of money or unnecessary valuables.
• Use cash alternatives such as debit cards
• Don’t carry a purse, use waist belts instead.
• Don’t leave purses unattended in shopping carts or on store counters
• If someone grabs your purse, do not resist
Protecting Yourself While Walking at Night
• Avoid walking or running alone at night. Instead go walking or jogging with a friend.
• Don't use headphones while walking, driving or jogging.
• Always walk in well-lighted areas.
• Avoid the use of short cuts.
• After dark, keep away from large bushes or doorways where someone could be lurking.
• Always stay near the curb.
• If someone in a vehicle stops and asks for directions, answer from a distance. Do not approach the vehicle.
• If followed, go immediately to an area with lights and people. If needed, turn around and walk in the opposite direction, your follower will also have to reverse directions.

Shopping Safety Tips:-
Be Safe, Stay Alert
1. Shop during daylight hours. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member.
2. Dress casually and comfortably.
3. Avoid being targeted by wearing expensive jewelry.
4. Stay alert to your surroundings.
5. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Use checks or credit cards.
6. If you must carry cash or a wallet, carry it in your front pocket. This will minimize the chance of your pocket being picked.
8. Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have a clear sightline.
11. Park in a well-lighted space, and be sure to lock the car, close the windows, and take the keys with you when you leave.
12. Place shopping bags, gifts and other valuable items in the trunk before you arrive at your destination.
13. Shopping with kids? Teach them to go to a store clerk or security person if you get separated.
14. Remember where you parked your vehicle.
15. Have your car keys in hand when approaching your vehicle.
ATM Safety:-

Using bank machines
• Whenever possible use bank machines in visible and active areas during active periods.
• If you must use a bank machine during inactive periods, consider a drive-through.
• Avoid after hours access to bank machines where you are not visible and cannot see into the bank machine area prior to entering it.
• Avoid using bank machines in areas that you are unfamiliar at night.
• If you absolutely must access a bank machine after hours in an unfamiliar area, consider using the buddy system or drive around the area before you access your cash or get out of your car.
• Avoid using a bank machine if the door lock seems defective.
• Be prepared to start your banking as soon as you arrive at the machine
• Be aware of your surroundings and always make sure that no one has the opportunity to see you entering your pin number or look over your shoulder.
• Even while using the ATM, stay alert to your surroundings. Look up and around every few seconds while transacting your business.
• Protect your Personal Identification Number (PIN). Do not enter your PIN if anyone else can see the screen. Shield your PIN from onlookers by using your body.
• When your transaction is finished, be sure you have your card and your receipt, then leave immediately.
• Avoid counting or otherwise displaying large amounts of cash.
• As you leave, keep a look out. Be alert for anything or anyone who appears suspicious. If you think you are being followed, go to an area with a lot of people and call the police.

Parking lot Safety:-
• While parking your car and walking to and from the store, scan the area for suspicious persons. If you notice something out of the ordinary, choose a different area to park in and notify mall security.
• Avoid parking by large vans. If there is a van parked next to your car when you return, enter your car from the passenger side.
• Conceal all valuable items in your vehicle such as: Cell phones, mp3 players, laptops, radar detectors, jewelry, etc.
• When entering and exiting your vehicle, do it quickly. Avoid having your back turned while putting bags away in your car.
• Be cautious of strangers asking for questions as you walk to or from your car.
• Familarize yourself with exits around the parking lot.
• Always lock your doors and roll the windows all the way up, even if you are just running in the store for a minute.
• Have your keys ready before you get to your vehicle. Searching for or fumbling through your purse to get yor keys leaves you vulnerable to attackers.
• Remember where you parked your car. When there are no row numbers provided, look around the parking lot for landmarks such as trees or light posts.
• Look under, in front of, and all around your car before you get in.
• Once you get in your car, leave! Many women sit in their car, preoccupied by other things such as: making a list, balancing your checkbook, fixing makeup, which makes you an easy target for a predator.

Transportation Safety:-

• Have your ticket or change ready so you do not have to get your wallet out at a busy place.
• Always wait in a well-lit area for your bus or train and wait near other people. If possible, meet a friend there to wait with you.
• IF you are on a bus alone, or if it is dark stay as close to the driver as possible. Do not go to the back of the bus.
• Stay awake while riding buses, trains and taxis.
• Always take an aisle seat so you won’t be blocked in.
• Pay attention to who gets off at your stop.

Travel Safety :-

• IF traveling to another country, find out about their laws, customs etc.
• Carry your money and personal documents ( Licence, passport, credit cards, etc) in a bag or purse that you can conceal under your clothing.
• Do not go out after dark alone.
• Do not wear a lot of jewelry. Having a lot of expensive looking or flashy jewelry makes you an easy target for predators.
• Never tell any one that you are traveling alone.

Vacation safety:-

• Have good locks on all doors and windows and double check them before leave.
• Ask a neighbor to watch your home while you are gone. Leave as much information about your vacation with them as possible, including emergency contact information in case something happens.
• Arrange for a neighbor or family member to gather your mail and newspaper deliveries.
• Ask your neighbor to park in your driveway if you will be taking your vehicle with you.

Safeguarding Your Home While on Vacation:-
• Strive to make your home look as lived-in as possible while you're away.
• Don't broadcast your plans but do let your neighbors and local law enforcement know.
• Give a spare key to your neighbors and give them an emergency telephone number to reach you.
• Arrange to have your mail and newspapers either stopped or picked up daily.
• Have someone mow your yard or rake the leaves so your house looks lived-in.
• Use automatic timers to turn on a radio and lights at different intervals to hide the fact you aren't home.
• Turn down the ringer on the telephone. An unanswered telephone is a dead give-away.
• Be sure you don't announce your absence on your answering machine message.
• Leave your blinds like you normally would if you were home. Only close them all the way if that is what you would normally do.
• Be sure to close and lock the garage as well as any storage sheds, gates, etc.
• Engrave all your valuables with your driver's license number. If possible videotape the contents of your home. Be sure to keep the video and the list of valuables in a safety deposit box.
• Ask your neighbor to occasionally park in your driveway. If you are leaving a vehicle parked outside, have the neighbor move it periodically so it looks as though you are home.
• Be sure someone knows your itinerary and your estimated time of arrival and return.
• If you get lost while traveling, ask directions of local law enforcement, not complete strangers.
• Be sure your vehicle is in good working condition and that you have taken enough money. Do not carry large amounts of cash, use credit cards and travelers' checks.

CAB SAFETY:-

a. Always check the identification of the driver
b. Be wary of cars with central locking
c. Don’t sit behind the driver as it may be easy for the driver to lock the rear passenger door- always choose the adjacent seat.
d. Do not engage in personal conversations with the driver. Do not give out too much information about yourself.
e. When you get to your destination, ask the driver to wait until you are inside.

Using Elevators:-
• While waiting for an elevator, stand off to the side; this gives you the opportunity to view inside and removes your obligation to enter if you are unsure of the occupants.
• If in doubt concerning people in an elevator do not get on; wait for the next one. If someone gets on the elevator after you and you’re not comfortable with them, get off.
• Stand near the control panel.
• If confronted, push all the floor buttons and the emergency button. DO NOT push the stop button; you may get trapped between floors.
Workplace :-
• Avoid isolated or deserted stairways
• Call security or the police if you see someone in the building you don’t recognize
• If working after hours, keep all doors and windows locked
• Try and arrange to have a co-worker stay with you.
• When you finish working, go to your vehicles together. Ensure the other is safely in their vehicle and on their way before you leave. Leave together if possible
• If the company has security, advise them you’re working late and ask if they can check in on you periodically.
• Advise security when you’re leaving and have them escort you to your vehicle.
• If alone, contact your family/friend and advise them that you’ll be working late and will call before you leave and advise them of your route home.
