Delhi University - A premium university


Delhi University (DU) is one of the best universities in the country. Through its numerous colleges, thousands of students every year get the opportunity to avail quality education in different fields and spheres. It is a dream of many of the top students in the country to get themselves enrolled in this premier organization. Many from as far as the North-East and the South come to the national capital for pursuing undergraduate as well as postgraduate studies. Even international students from different countries find it convenient and a privilege to study in this famed university. Students passing out from its top colleges are sought after by most organizations, companies, institutions and the various government departments for a myriad of roles. A host of undergraduate and postgraduate courses are offered here such as BA, BSc, B.Com, BEd, BCA, MA, MSc, M.Com, MCA, MPhil, MEd, MBA and a lot more. The university follows a rigorous process to screen out the applicants for its various courses. It is the bright students who are mostly able to get through the screening process and get admitted to their favourite courses. There are two ways that a prospective student can take admission to a Delhi University college. One is through merit and the other is through an entrance exam.

Admission process - tentative dates


  1. Undergraduate courses (merit based) – Online admission process begins from June 2017. Application fees are to be paid through online mode only.
  2. Undergraduate courses (entrance exam based) – Online registration process is likely to begin from May 2017.
  3. Postgraduate courses – For all postgraduate courses the registrations begin from April 2017.

Since the official admission notification by the university is not yet out, the dates mentioned above are all tentative. Prospective students are advised to refer the official website of Delhi University for getting the actual dates and month of admission, as and when the admission notification is released by the university.

Eligibility criteria


  • For joining the undergraduate courses in the university you must have 10+2 or an equivalent qualification in the concerned stream of study. The qualification should have been obtained from a recognized board or institute.

  • If you are looking for joining a postgraduate course, then you must have a graduation degree in any of the streams from a recognized university or institute.


Merit based selections for undergraduate courses


  • Online application process begins: June 2017
  • Last date for online application: June 2017
  • 1st cut-off list is released: June 2017
  • Subsequent cut off lists are released till: July 2017

Entrance exam based selections for undergraduate courses


  • Online registration begins from: May 2017
  • Last date of online registration: May 2017
  • Date of examination: June 2017
  • Declaration of results: July 2017

For postgraduate courses


  • Application forms will be available from: April 2017
  • Last date of online registration: May 2017
  • Date of examination: June 2017
  • Admit cards are to be available from: 15 days before entrance exam
  • Declaration of results: July 2017

The application procedure


Delhi University allows for both online as well as offline mode of applying for admission to one of its colleges. The details of the application process and the other requirements including eligibility, documents to be submitted are all given in the information brochure that can be either downloaded from the website of the university or can be obtained directly from the university office. Those who will be appearing for the entrance exam will be issued with admit cards. The admit cards will be emailed to the applicants or can be even downloaded from the university website. While carrying their admit cards to the examination centre, the applicants need to produce a valid ID proof too, before they will be allowed to sit for the entrance exam.

Result declaration and counselling


The results will be declared on the official website of the university in the month of May or June 2017. Candidates who have scored above the cut-off marks will be called by the university for the counselling process. The candidates will be called on the basis of merit list. During the counselling the candidates need to produce the necessary documents. Only after the verification of documents and submission of admission fees will the candidates be confirmed for final admission.

Delhi University was established in the year 1922. It has the President of India as the Visitor. Vice-Prseident of India is the Chancellor and the Chief Justice of India is the Pro-Chancellor. It has under its fold 77 colleges spread across the national capital. Some of the most famous colleges of DU are St. Stephens, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Ramjas, Hindu, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Hans Raj, Miranda House and so on. For ease of administration the different colleges, according to their location, have been grouped into 2 groups, the North campus and the South campus. It has on its rolls 1,32,435 regular students. Many more are enrolled in non-formal education programmes of the university. When it started, there were only 2 faculties, Arts and Science. But now there are 16 faculties and 86 academic departments. DU has a huge infrastructure, which can be gauged from the fact that the university has 16 big libraries apart from libraries in individual colleges.
