How to join non-Commissioned ranks in the Indian Navy

In India many young men are interested to join armed forces. But most of them do not have prior information in this regard. As a result, they do not get adequate opportunity to join armed forces. This is also because of the fact that in armed forces, the upper age limit is comparatively low compared to other Government services. Moreover, very few people can join Commissioned ranks. So, in this article we will discuss the eligibility conditions of joining various non-Commissioned ranks of Indian Navy for the benefit of aspirants.

There are four non-Commissioned ranks where Indian Navy recruits young people. These four ranks are (a) Artificer Apprentice, (b) Senior Secondary Recruits, (c) Matric Recruits and Non-Matric Recruits and (d) Musicians.

Eligibility conditions for the rank of Artificer Apprentice (AA)

  1. Age: The applicant should be of age between 17 years to 20 years on the date of enrollment.
  2. Nationality: Applicants for this post should be resident Indians and the Gorkhas from Nepal.
  3. Marital Status: Applicants for this post should be unmarried males.
  4. Educational Qualifications: Applicants should have passed X+II from any recognized Board with subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The minimum qualification marks vary year to year. The minimum qualification marks will be indicated in the advertisement.
  5. Physical standards: The candidates should qualify the mandatory physical test consisting of 1.6 km run to be completed in 7 minutes, 20 squats and 10 push-ups. The applicants should be of minimum height of 157 cm with proportionate body weight. The applicants should have proportionate chest with minimum expansion capacity of 5 cm. They should possess good mental and physical health.
  6. Eye sight: The prescribed standards are indicated below:
    Without glasses- Better Eye: 6/12, Worse Eye: 6/12; With Glasses- Better Eye: 6/9, Worse Eye: 6/12. In addition, applicants should possess colour perception standards of CP II.
  7. Training: The training for Artificer Apprentice consists of 9 weeks basic training and 8 weeks sea training. Thereafter 4 years training in technical training establishments of the Navy is necessary.
  8. Engagement: The engagement starts only after successful completion of training. The initial engagement is for 20 years which can be extended up to 57 years of age depending upon rank attained and satisfactory performance.


Eligibility conditions for the rank of Senior Secondary Recruits (SSR)

  1. Age: The applicant should be of age between 17 years to 21 years on the date of enrollment.
  2. Nationality: Applicants for this post should be resident Indians and the Gorkhas from Nepal.
  3. Marital Status: Applicants for this post should be unmarried males.
  4. Educational Qualifications: Applicants should have passed X+II from any recognized Board with subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The minimum qualification marks vary year to year. The minimum qualification marks will be indicated in the advertisement.
  5. Physical standards: The candidates should qualify the mandatory physical test consisting of 1.6 km run to be completed in 7 minutes, 20 squats and 10 push-ups. The applicants should be of minimum height of 157 cm with proportionate body weight. The applicants should have proportionate chest with minimum expansion capacity of 5 cm. They should possess good mental and physical health.
  6. Eye sight: The prescribed standards are indicated below:
    Without glasses- Better Eye: 6/6, Worse Eye: 6/9; With Glasses- Better Eye: 6/6, Worse Eye: 6/6. In addition, applicants should possess colour perception standards of CP II.
  7. Training: The training for SSRs consists of 24 weeks basic training and 24 weeks training in naval establishments of the Navy.
  8. Engagement: The engagement starts only after successful completion of training. The initial engagement is for 15 years which could be extended up to 57 years of age depending upon rank attained and satisfactory performance.


Eligibility conditions for the rank of Matric Recruit and Non Matric Recruit (MR and NMR)


Branches: The following branches form part of the under mentioned Entries: (a) MRs – Steward, Cooks, (b) NMRs - Topass
  1. Age: The applicant should be of age between 17 years to 21 years on the date of enrollment.
  2. Nationality: Applicants for this post should be resident Indians and the Gorkhas from Nepal.
  3. Marital Status: Applicants for this post should be unmarried males.
  4. Educational Qualifications: (a) MR Steward/ Cook: Applicant should have passed Xth class examination.
    (b) NMR Topass: Applicant should have passed VIth class examination.
  5. Physical standards: The candidates should qualify the mandatory physical test consisting of 1.6 km run to be completed in 7 minutes, 20 squats and 10 push-ups. The applicants should be of minimum height of 157 cm with proportionate body weight. The applicants should have proportionate chest with minimum expansion capacity of 5 cm. They should possess good mental and physical health.
  6. Eye sight: The prescribed standards are indicated below:
    For MRs: Without glasses- Better Eye: 6/36, Worse Eye: 6/36; With Glasses- Better Eye: 6/9, Worse Eye: 6/12. For NMRs: Without glasses- Better Eye: 6/60, Worse Eye: 6/60; With Glasses- Better Eye: 6/9, Worse Eye: 6/24. In addition, applicants should possess colour perception standards of CP II.
  7. Training: The training consists of 15 weeks basic training and subsequent training in naval establishments of the Navy.
  8. Engagement: The engagement starts only after successful completion of training. The initial engagement is for 15 years which could be extended up to 57 years of age depending upon rank attained and satisfactory performance.


Eligibility conditions for the rank of Musician

  1. Musical Ability: The candidate applying should have proficiency in western notation, aural aptitude, knowledge of Theory of Music and actual practical skill on any musical instrument.
  2. Type of Instruments: The candidates applying should have proficiency in playing string, key-board, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.
  3. Age: The applicant should be of age between 17 years to 21 years on the date of enrollment.
  4. Nationality: Applicants for this post should be resident Indians and the Gorkhas from Nepal.
  5. Marital Status: Applicants for this post should be unmarried males.
  6. Educational Qualifications: Applicant should have passed Xth from recognized board and should be able to exhibit an aptitude for music.
  7. Physical standards: The candidates should qualify the mandatory physical test consisting of 1.6 km run to be completed in 7 minutes, 20 squats and 10 push-ups. The applicants should be of minimum height of 157 cm with proportionate body weight. The applicants should have proportionate chest with minimum expansion capacity of 5 cm. They should possess good mental and physical health.
  8. Eye sight: The prescribed standards are as under: Without glasses- Better Eye: 6/60, Worse Eye: 6/60; With Glasses- Better Eye: 6/9, Worse Eye: 6/24. In addition, applicants should posses colour perception standards of CP II.
  9. Responsibility for Conduct of Recruitment for Musicians: The Director of Music (DOM) at INS Kunjali, Mumbai-400005 is responsible for conduct of recruitment for Musician sailors as per schedule promulgated by IHQ MOD (Navy).

Interested young men should prepare themselves for these non-commissioned ranks in Indian Navy well in advance, and try to clear the examination as and when opportunity comes. It must be remembered that they will not get opportunity after attaining 21 years of age. So start preparing as early as possible.

Indian Navy is considered to be one of the greatest Defence Force of the country. The men in white uniform Guard over the coastline of India. This article have certainly put some light upon the joining entries in Indian Navy. Once you get into the defence service, you need to put in your heart and soul for the country. Every work given to you should be done dedicatedly because many lives are dependent on you. Any casual attitude towards any work in defence can lead to a major issues which can then result in loosening the faith of people in defence.
