Bird-watching in and around Delhi


Although Delhi is being urbanized rapidly, there are still some places in around the city where different species of birds can be seen. During the winter months, many migratory birds can also be seen in these spots. The author has written about six such spots around Delhi where the bird-watchers can enjoy watching different species of birds.

Delhi has become a concrete jungle. Over the years the population of the city has been increasing. Proportionately, the amount of greenery within and around the city has been decreasing. But even now, there are some places in and around Delhi where bird- watchers can watch different types of birds including migratory birds, especially during winters. In this article, some places where bird-watching is possible have been mentioned. It is expected that the bird-watchers will be benefitted if they visit these places during winter (November to February).

Sultanpur National Park, Gurgaon

This national park is located at a distance of 50 km from Dhaula Kuan. This is a very small national park and the only national park located in Haryana. During the winter season, around 250 species of birds can be seen in this national park. More than hundred species of migratory birds arrive at this national park during winter. There are watch towers located at strategic positions inside the park. Bird-watchers can enjoy site of different birds in the national park as well as in the neighboring agricultural fields.

Surajpur Wetland and Bio-diversity Park, Greater Noida

This place is well-known among the bird-watchers of Delhi. This bio-diversity park is located at a distance of 50 km from Delhi. Many migratory birds can be seen in the wetlands during winter. The migratory birds leave this park by the end of February.

Yamuna Bio-Diversity Park, New Delhi

This is located near Wazirpur Village, New Delhi. There are wetlands, herbal gardens and a bamboo forest inside the park. Many birds can be seen in this bio-diversity park. However, during the last few years, the number of migratory birds has decreased in this park, most probably due to pollution in the surrounding areas.

Delhi Zoo

In the ponds and lakes of the Delhi Zoo, the bird-watchers can see different species of birds along with various migratory birds. Here also the number of migratory birds has been decreasing over the years.

Lodhi Garden, New Delhi

Lodhi Garden is the best maintained garden in Delhi. In Lodhi Garden more than 50 species of birds can be seen. These include house sparrow, bulbul, owl, crows, doves, woodpeckers, kingfishers, parakeets, kites, pigeons and ducks. However, migratory birds are rare in Lodhi Garden.

Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, New Delhi

This is the only wildlife sanctuary of New Delhi. It is located on the southern reach of the Aravalli Hills. In this sanctuary more than 190 bird species can be seen. Besides birds, other wild animals and butterflies can be seen here. During winter, migratory birds can also be seen in this sanctuary. However, the bird-watchers are advised not to visit this sanctuary alone. They should visit the sanctuary in groups.

Concluding comments

Despite rapid urbanization and consequent increase in pollution, even today, many species of birds can be seen in these places. Not only Indian species, migratory birds can also be seen in the aforestated places by the bird- watchers. The new bird-watchers would be able to learn about many birds and their habits if they visit these sanctuaries during winter months. Needless to mention that the bird-watchers must carry binoculars, cameras, umbrellas, bird-book, notebooks, pencils and audio recorders along with them. Loud music must be avoided in the jungle. Let us enter the wonderful world of bird-watching in Delhi.
