During the 2012 civic polls, the Shiv Sena party managed to win in five of the ten cities in the State of Maharashtra. While they won in the cities of Mumbai, Thane, Ulhasnagar, Nagpur and Akola, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won in Pimpri-Chinchwad. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) party unsettled everyone by winning 40 seats, becoming the undisputed winner in the major city of Nashik and came a close second in the city of Pune.

Like in the previous polls held in 2012, there are 227 electoral wards in the city of Mumbai for which candidates are contesting this year. More than 90,000 citizens were eligible to vote in Mumbai city alone. Thankfully, this time round there was a far better response and people did turn out in good numbers to cast their votes not just in Mumbai but in other cities as well.
