Career in Theatre through Diploma Course in Dramatic Arts at NSD Delhi admissions 2017

The National School of Drama, Delhi invites students to apply for admission to its 3-year Diploma course in Dramatic Arts for the academic session beginning this year.

About the Diploma course

The NSD Diploma course in Dramatic Arts is a 3 year full time residential course. For the academic session 2017 to 2020, the course will likely begin in July 2017.

The primary goal of the course is to offer education & training to make you a complete professional in the fields of acting, design and varied theatre-related disciplines. You may get the opportunity to participate in a festival or perform on stage or attend a seminar abroad as part of the Student Exchange Program of the school. So keep your passport ready if selected for admission to the NSD Diploma course!
The faculty will conduct lectures in English and/or Hindi as per the subject of study. Plays performed will be in Hindi only.

The Diploma in Dramatic Arts awarded by the School has been recognized by the Government of India for the purpose of recruitment to superior posts and services under the Central Government, where specialization is required in the field of Dramatics. The Diploma is equal to a master's degree in dramatics, and NSD graduates are eligible for appointment as teachers in colleges and universities as well as for registration in research and Ph.D. programs.



Number of seats

There are 26 seats for the Diploma course in Dramatic Arts. Reservations are as follows: 4 seats for Scheduled caste candidates; 1 + 1 seat for Scheduled tribe candidate, including N.T.; and 7 seats for OBC candidates (except Creamy Layer as notified by the Government) and physically disabled persons, as per Govt. of India rules.

Fees

Candidates selected for admission will have to pay all fees and other dues, as listed below, before the opening day, failing which they will not be admitted to NSD.
  • Admission fee: Rs. 150

  • Tuition fee:Rs. 150 per month

  • Students' Union membership fee: Rs. 60 per year

  • Advance fee for make-up kit:Rs. 2000 (adjustable)

  • Caution money and library fee deposit: Rs. 9000 (refundable after final settlement of accounts)

  • Stationery fee: Rs. 1650

Note: You will be provided, with no extra charges, a mount board, drawing paper and wood for classroom purposes. Any other required material will have to be purchased by you at your expense. You will also need to buy the required notebooks and make-up kit, the total cost of which is approximately Rs.3000. You will be allotted a locker to keep your material and personal belongings in it. Please refer to the prospectus for additional fees, such as hostel, mess, insurance, etc.

Scholarship

The selected student will receive a monthly scholarship of Rs.8,000/- p.m. for academic and related expenses.

NSD Diploma course in Dramatic Arts curriculum

The curriculum for the Diploma course in Dramatic Arts incorporates understanding the methodology of well known personalities from the theatre world. National and international drama traditions, contemporary global trends in theatre and the myriad aspects of traditional folk theatre are part of the course modules.

What you will learn

  1. First year: The basics of acting, design, direction theatre history, literature & aesthetics.

  2. Second year: Theatre History, Literature & Aesthetics + the student can select a specialization from three options: Acting (specialization), Direction(specialization) and Theatre Techniques and Design (specialization).

  3. Third year: You will get advanced training in the specialisation which you opted for in your second year.

  2. Acting:
    • Yoga

    • Voice and speech

    • Movement

  3. Direction

  4. Design & theater technique:
    • Scenic design

    • Costume design

    • Theatre architecture

    • Lighting design

    • Make-up

  5. Production:
    • Techniques of moving from text to stage

    • Structure of plays, languages of performance

    • The art of direction, design and acting.

    • Understanding of sound, music and visual design

    • Selection and study of plays

Note: You will be required to do a lot of research and extensive field work as part of the production process. Productions are done to the public from the first year onwards. It may include a Sanskrit/Greek text, a play based on a traditional/folk form, farce, European Renaissance play, Indian and non-Indian modern & contemporary texts.

In addition to the subjects of study listed above, students will attend workshop sessions and appreciation courses.

Eligibility requirements

  1. Age criteria: The age limit as on 1st July 2017 is 18 years minimum and 30 years maximum. The upper age limit is relaxable by 5 years for SC /ST candidates only.

  2. Educational qualification: You must be a graduate in any subject from a recognized university in India or abroad.

  3. Theatre experience: You must have participated in at least 6 theatre productions.

  4. General skills: You must have working knowledge of English and Hindi.

  5. Physical fitness: You will need to be physically fit, which will have to be proved by undergoing a medical test for physical fitness at NSD, Delhi.

Selection process

There will be a preliminary test / audition and a final workshop through which the aptitude and talent of the candidate will be assessed by an official NSD committee. The requisite study material & general guidelines for the Diploma course in Dramatic Arts will be given with the prospectus (which is available online as well as in hard copy form).

The preliminary test/audition schedule is as follows:
  1. Guwahati: 1st May 2017

  2. Kolkata: 3rd and 4th May 2017

  3. Bhubaneswar: 6th May 2017

  4. Chennai: 8th May 2017

  5. Bangalore: 10th May

  6. Chandigarh: 20th May 2017

  7. Bhopal: 12th May 2017

  8. Mumbai: 14th, 15th and 16th May 2017

  9. Lucknow: 18th May 2017

  10. Delhi: 21st to 24th May 2017

Workshop details

Once you qualify through the test, you will need to attend a workshop for 5 days in the Delhi campus premises of the National School of Drama from 10th to 14th June 2017.

You will be paid D.A. and a 3-tier sleeper class train fare / bus fare from your residence to Delhi & back via the shortest route. To avail of the fare, you will need to submit the ticket/cash receipt. You will also be provided accommodation on sharing basis.



How to apply

There are various ways to apply for admission to the NSD Diploma course in Dramatic Arts, as mentioned below.
  1. You can obtain the application form & prospectus (in English & Hindi) by post. You can request it to be sent to you by writing to:

    You have to send your request along with a crossed Demand Draft/Pay Order, payable at Delhi, of Rs.225/- (including postal charges) in favour of The Director, National School of Drama, New Delhi. Your request should reach by 16th May 2016.

  2. You can obtain the application form & prospectus from the book shop of the National School of Drama from 22nd March 2017 to 22nd April 2017 on cash payment of Rs.150/- between 10a.m. to 1p.m. and from 2p.m. to 5p.m. on working days.

  3. You can download the application form from the online admissions portal of NSD from 22nd March 2017. Fill in the downloaded form and send to the address mentioned in #1 above, along with a Demand Draft of Rs.150/- in favour of The Director, National School of Drama, New Delhi in an envelope titled "Application for Admission – 2017-20".

  4. You can also fill in the form online, upload the requisite documents and pay the online fee for it of Rs.50

Admission process for foreign students

Foreign students can apply for the NSD Diploma course in Dramatic Arts, with one or two only being selected due to limited seats. Such students have to submit their applications in the prescribed form through the Indian Embassy/High Commission in their countries, who will forward these to the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). The School will then consider the application recommended by the ICCR.
