Introduction :

In today's information society, an explosive growth of electronic information is being witnessed. Many industrial sectors like banking, power, bio-informatics, operate huge data warehouses for collecting many different types of relevant data.

Information System (IS) is a particular type of work system that uses information technology to capture, transmit, store, retrieve, manipulate or display information, thereby providing support to one or more other work systems. This refresher course emphasizes the essential role of information systems in the systems through which the today’s business operate.

Course Contents:

Introduction to Information System (IS) – Definition, role of IS, differences between a system and IS. Business processes: process modeling DFDs,, Flowcharts, structured English etc, characteristics of a process, evaluating business process performance, basic communication and decision making concepts.

Types of Information Systems – related to specific functional areas of business – product design systems, Supply chain systems, manufacturing systems, sales and marketing systems, finance systems

IS categories that apply in any Functional areas – Office automation systems, communication systems, transaction processing systems, Management and Executive information systems, decision support systems. Limitations and uses of IS categories.

Understanding system from business view point – need for framework and models, working system framework and its relationship with IS, need for a balance view of a system, measuring work system performance, concepts and vocabulary for looking at working system.
