Troubleshooting Guide to online linking of PAN Card and Aadhar Card

As you might be aware that government has made it mandatory to link PAN card with Aadhar card. But many people are facing problems while linking the two. Some problems are arising because of the difference in information in both documents or such other reasons. So let's have a quick look on the necessary information to solve your problem.

How to link Aadhaar card with PAN card

  1. First of all, go to Income Tax e filling website at https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. Enter your login ID, password and date of birth. However, if you are filing return for the first time, then you need to click on 'Register Now' button and fill form accordingly.
  2. As you successfully log in the website link provided above, a popup window will open where you will see an option to link Aadhaar. But if you don't get any popup window then you need to go to Profile setting option and click on 'Link Aadhaar' button.
  3. Enter the required information like your name, date of birth and gender.
  4. Match the details provided on the screen with your Aadhaar Card and click on link now button.
  5. On successful linking of the two, you will get a pop- up message on the screen indicating the message 'Aadhar- PAN linking is completed successfully'.

Basic problems and solutions while linking PAN card and Aadhar card

The main problem which most of the people are facing while linking these two cards is due to the difference in information provided in both cards. For example, your name could be A. K. Aggarwal in PAN card but your full name as mentioned in Aadhar card is Ashok Kumar Aggarwal. Not only this, some names contain special characters like apostrophe in the name D'arcy or D'souza. Now the problem here is that Aadhar couldn't recognise special characters while PAN recognises them. Another discrepancy which is a rising in names is due to spelling mistakes. If your name is also lengthy, then it's possible that you have made any spelling mistake while mentioning your name in any of the two cards.



Here are the methods to make changes in your PAN card and Aadhar card. But make sure that you change only incorrect information and keep the legal information unaltered.

How to make corrections in PAN card

Go to the website https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/PAN/changerequest.html and enter the details. You need to pay Rs. 107 using your Debit Card / Credit Card/ Demand Draft or you can pay through netbanking. You also need to upload required documents to verify the changes made. For example, if you have made correction in your name, then you need to upload soft copy of your any other ID proof which could be your driving licence or Voter ID or even Aadhar card. At last, enter your digital signature. You will receive your new PAN card with changes made at your address.

Some people face problem while providing digital signature. If you are also one of them, then you can take printout of the form submitted after making corrections. Put your signature on these papers and send them to the provided postal address superscribing the envelope with 'APPLICATION FOR PAN CHANGE REQUEST--- N-Acknowledgment Number'. Such application should reach NSDL within 15 days from the date of online application.

How to make changes in Aadhar card

Go to the website uidai.gov.in and click on 'Update Aadhaar Details (Online)'. Click on 'To submit your update/ correction request online please'. Enter your Aadhaar number, verify captcha and click on send OTP button. Enter the OTP received on your registered mobile number and click on Login button. Select the fields which you want to update. You can change your name, gender, date of birth, address, mobile number or email Id. You also need to upload required documents to verify the changes made. Now click on confirm button and then select BPO service provider button. Submit your request. Now go to update status option and enter your Aadhaar number and UAN. Sign out after getting the message your request complete successful.

To make any offline changes in your Aadhaar, you need to visit the Aadhaar Seva Kendra of your area. They will ask your Aadhaar number and you will undergo e-verification process. Don't forget to carry your PAN card, voter ID card or driving licence in original for verification purpose.

I have a couple of queries:
Is it that only those who file IT returns need to link the PAN card with the Aadhaar card? Do those not falling in the tax bracket, and hence not filing returns, also need to do this?

Also, was the last date extended for the linking process from 30th June 2017? Is there any new last date?
