A Refresher Course on Neural Network & Fuzzy Logic Applications to Power System Deregulation

June 2 – 14, 2008

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Warangal – 506 004. (A.P.)

Introduction :

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a machine emulation of the human thinking process. The brain is more than just a machine. The human brain is a source of natural intelligence and a truly remarkable parallel computer. Our knowledge about the brain is so inadequate at present that the research into this complex organ (brain) of the body will dominate in the first century of the current millennium to understand the human brain and its thinking process.

The current interest in Neural Networks is largely a result of their ability to mimic natural intelligence. Neural Networks have emerged as a powerful technique for Pattern Recognition, Pattern Classification, Function approximation, Optimization, Prediction and Control. Whereas Fuzzy logic is a method for representing information in a way that resembles natural human communication and for manipulating that information in a way that resembles how humans reason with this information. Fuzzy Logic is powerful yet straight forward problem solving technique with wide spread applicability, specially in the areas of control and decision making.

The Power System Deregulation and restructuring of electric supply industries is taking place in different forms with different pace. Competition has been introduced in power system based on the premise that it will increase the efficiency of this industrial sector and reduce the cost of electrical energy of consumers.

The objective of the present course is to introduce concepts of Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic, Evolutionary Computing, Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) and Power System Deregulation.
