How to become a Theatre Artist with National School of Drama Repertory Company


Are you looking for employment opportunities as a theatre artist? The National School of Drama Repertory Company has issued a notification for recruitment of theatre artists for its session beginning in mid-July 2017. This article provides complete information on the eligibility criteria, salary offered and how to apply for the vacancies for theatre artists.

Established by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1959, the National School of Drama is financially supported by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The National School of Drama is a well renowned training institution for its in-depth Diploma courses, intensive training programs and workshops in all aspects of theatre. One of the the performing sections of the National School of Drama is the Repertory Company. Those who graduate from the National School of Drama are recruited into the Repertory Company, to perform as theatre artistes on a professional level. They are generally recruited on a contractual basis for the duration of a year and given a fixed salary, the contract being renewed later on the basis of their performance.

This month, the Repertory Company is inviting applications for the posts of Artists Grade A and Grade B for the new session beginning in mid-July 2017. While anybody fulfilling the eligibility requirements can apply, preference will be given to graduates of NSD.



About the vacancies

For both, You will be recruited on a contract basis for one year, which may be extended for a further period of five years, based on an annual assessment each year.
  1. Artist Grade A salary slab: Rs.45,000/- to Rs.50,000/- (consolidated)

  2. Artist Grade B salary slab: Rs.40,000/- to Rs.45,000/- (consolidated)

Eligibility requirements for Artists Grade A

  1. Academic qualification: You must be a graduate of the National School of Drama or of a recognized theatre training institute or you should have at least five years post-training experience in acting and eminence in the field.

  2. Experience: You should have participated in at least 15 important productions in Hindi or any other Indian language, having major roles in these productions.

  3. Language proficiency: You must be proficient in Hindi language and speech.

  4. Desirable qualifications:
    • You should have some knowledge of dance, music and allied arts.

    • You should have some experience in directing a play or stage craft work.

    • You should have some knowledge of regional languages/dialects.

    • You should have some knowledge of acting theories and style.

Eligibility requirements for Artists Grade B

  1. Academic qualification: You must be a graduate of the National School of Drama or of a recognized theatre training institute or you should have at least two years post-training experience in acting.

  2. Experience: You should have participated in at least ten important productions in Hindi or any other Indian language, having major roles in these productions.

  3. Language proficiency: You must be proficient in Hindi language and speech.

  4. Desirable qualifications: same as mentioned above for the vacancies of Artist Grade A.

Note: There may be relaxation in above-mentioned qualifications in the case of candidates who are otherwise found suitable.
