Refresher Course on Pavement Management and Road Safety
July 07 – 19, 2008
Sponsored By MHRD, Government of India, New Delhi
Organized by Department of Civil Engineering National Institute of Technology Warangal – 506004, Andhra Pradesh
Introduction :
Government of India has initiated two major projects in transport sector to improve the speed and safety on Indian roads. One is the National Highways Development Program [NHDP] to convert the 13,146 km of national highways to high quality 4/6 lane highways and the other one is the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) to provide the connectivity to unconnected rural habitations by new road construction of 3,68,000 km and upgradation/renewal of 3,70,000 km of roads in rural areas.
This large road network is a valuable national asset and this is to be maintained in good condition and to extend pavement life and minimize life cycle cost. The basic purpose of pavement management is to achieve the best value possible for the available public funds and to provide safe, comfortable and economic transportation. Good pavement management requires an organized and systematic approach for planning, design, construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of pavements. Improving road safety through proper pavement engineering and maintenance should be one of the major objectives of pavement management.
In this context, an Advanced Technology Programme on Pavement Management and Road Safety is being proposed to discuss the following issues.
Proposed Course Contents :
Road Development Plan Vision 2021 & Rural Road Development Plan Vision 2025 Soil Subgrade Characterization Characterization of Road Aggregates Characterization of Bituminous Materials Mix Design – Bituminous, Cement Concrete Traffic Estimation for Pavement Design Stresses in Flexible and Rigid Pavements Design of Flexible and Rigid Pavements Specifications to different Bituminous Layers Specifications to non-Bituminous Base and Sub-Base Courses Ground Improvement Techniques Highway Equipment Construction Techniques in Flexible and Rigid Pavements QC&QA in Pavement Construction, TQM Failures in Pavements Evaluation of Pavements and Overlay Design Maintenance of Pavements Pavement Management System Life Cycle Cost Analysis, Road User Costs and Benefits, HDM CPM and PERT in Road Construction Causes of Road Accidents Analysis of Road Accidents Design of Roads for Safety Safety in Construction Zones Road Safety Audit
