At the outset, I must state that this article is not for computer professionals or for computer-savvy people. This article is for us, for those who have just learned the basics of computers. Nowadays, even such people have to send and receive e-mails. Even such people who are just computer-literate, have to store personal data in their personal computer. This article is for those people. In this article, basic security precautions required to protect e-mails and personal data are being discussed.

Create strong and complex pass-words

It is understandably difficult to remember strong password. But we have to remember that hackers can easily guess an easy password containing nickname, date of birth, child's name, etc. A simple trick to create complex password is to include letters both in upper case and lower case, numbers, and a special character like '@', '#', etc. It is also important to change the password at regular intervals.

Share your e-mail address only with very trustworthy people

Please resist from sharing your e-mail address to anyone and everyone, unless it is absolutely necessary. Never post your e-mail address on those sites which you do not trust. It is a sure-shot way to invite huge amount of spam e-mails. In case you receive considerable spam e-mails, there is always an option to unsubscribe at the bottom of the email. Always do that. You can also mark the emails which you don't wish to see, as spam.



Do not reply to spam e-mail messages

Always remember that If you reply to spam messages. it can result in attracting more and more such messages. Simply unsubscribe or mark such messages as spam.

Watch out for phishing scams

Beware of phishing scams! Such scams are fraudulent e-mails directing a unsuspecting person to fake website which may look exactly like the ones you are used to working on. These phishing scams will try to entice you to enter you personal information that can result in cyber theft.

Subscribe to a security software as early as possible

It is very important to select good security software to protest your computer. New viruses are created every single day that can severely damage personal data and steal information as well. Just installing security software is not enough; it is also very necessary to ensure that it is kept up-to-date also.

Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files

Please remember not to open an attachment which looks/ sounds dubious/fictitious. It can contain virus which will infect the computer instantly. Please also make sure to scan every attachment with your anti-virus software before opening the same.



Beware of pop-ups

While surfing the Internet we often get pop-ups which seem to be from real websites asking for our urgent attention. These pop-ups may even say that your computer has been infected with a virus. Please never entertain such pop-ups and just close them immediately. If you fill any information sought by these pop-ups, it would prove harmful for your computer and yourself. Doing so may cause theft of your personal data.

You have to remember that it is your responsibility to protect your personal data. Hackers are always ready to steal your personal details. Take the afore-stated preliminary precautions and you will be 90% safe for the hackers. Try to take these precautions immediately - why not from today?
