How to become a software engineer


Nowadays the jobs for software engineers are increasing. Many new companies are coming up and recruiting many software engineers. A bachelor degree in engineering is the requirement. The eligibility criteria, qualification requirement and all details are discussed in detail in this article.

Software Engineer profile

A software engineer is an engineer who works on the principles of software engineering to design, develop, maintain, test and evaluate software that make computers or anything containing software to work. A software engineer writes software program.

Many Indian based companies having multi location offices and foreign companies having multi locational offices are recruiting many software engineers to carry out the work. Computerization of many activities of offices and industries is taking place very fast. A need for software engineers has increased manifold. The Indian and foreign companies are recruiting many of these persons. They have equal opportunities in India and abroad.

Qualification required

Graduation is the minimum qualification required to become a software engineer. A degree in software engineering will best suits the requirement. A computer science engineer or information technology engineer is preferred. A post graduate in mathematics may also be considered for this post.

While studying you can learn couple of languages and understand how they function. The languages can be C++,C#,Java,Javascript. There are many other languages like this. You can improve your mathematical skills simultaneously. Mathematics is very useful for a software engineer.

While studying, try to use your skills and do some programming so that your proficiency will increase. During your degree course try and get some internship in some institute and practice making some programs. It will give you hands on experience. It will help in finding a job easily.

While you are working also you have to improve your skills to update yourself with latest developments. Try to do required certificate courses which will add onto your skills and help you in improving career growth. It is advisable to complete your post graduation also for a better prospectus.

Campus Interviews

Many big companies will send their teams to famous universities and engineering colleges to conduct campus interviews and select final year students as engineers for their organization. The interview method will be long and involve written test, group discussion, technical interview and final interview with HR department. Some companies will have two technical interviews before final interview.

Initial written test will have various questions on the following:
Verbal section consists of questions based on Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Sentence Correction, Synonyms, Antonym, Spellings, Idioms etc.

Reasoning section checks the analytical and reasoning skills. It consists of questions on Visual Reasoning, Statement & Conclusions, Relationships, Data sufficiency, Coding-decoding, Series, Odd one out, Analogies, puzzles etc.

Quantitative Ability section consists of questions based on topics such as algebra, time & work, time, speed & distance, arithmetic, percentages, profit & loss, geometry, etc. In general, the section difficulty level varies from easy to moderate. You have to see that you will complete the questions within the time.

Technical Ability section involves questions from programming & algorithm development concepts.This section covered topics such as structure & constructs of Computer Programs, Data structures & Basic algorithms and Object Oriented Programming concepts. This section requires thorough preparation with conceptual clarity and strong knowledge of the fundamentals.

Off Campus interviews

In addition to campus interviews, companies will conduct off campus interviews also by calling students of some selected colleges together. Here also they will conduct interview as per the procedure mentioned above.

References by their employees

The employees working in the company can upload the application of their known candidates. Basing on the availability of posts, they will also be called for interview. The procedure will be same for all selections.

Walk in interviews

Companies will give advertisements in leading news papers for these posts. They will mention the date, time and venue of the selection. Interested can attend with all their credentials. The selection procedure starts from written test to final interview.

Paper advertisements

Some companies will release advertisements in the newspaper for applications. The applications will be screened and shortlisted members will be called for interviews.

Career growth

Software Engineers or Developers will be promoted based on their technical skills. Different organizations may have different names and different qualifications for each role.

As you move towards the Senior roles, you have a couple of options First option is technical lead role. It requires both technical skills and management skills. This role will have the advantage of trying duties of management without completely leaving the technical front. One can opt out to a full manager's job or a technical role from this role.
The second option is to be in the technical side only. This technical role will not have any direct reporting employees., The role is a technical leadership role. It will be a senior role for mentoring and supporting junior software professionals.
